This role ensures that all fields meet NCAA Division 1 standards for safety, playability, and aesthetics through mowing, irrigation, infield preparation, and general turf management. The specialist will work collaboratively with coaches and facilities staff to support athletic events and maintain high-quality playing surfaces year-round.

Work Performed Field Maintenance:

Perform regular mowing, edging, and trimming of soccer, football, baseball, and softball fields to maintain optimal playing conditions.

Irrigation Management:

Monitor, operate, and maintain irrigation systems to ensure proper hydration of turf and infield surfaces, adjusting schedules based on weather and field usage.

Infield Preparation:

Prepare and maintain infield surfaces for baseball and softball, including dragging, raking, and applying clay or conditioner to ensure safe and consistent playing surfaces.

Game and Practice Preparation:

Set up fields for games and practices, including lining fields, marking boundaries, and ensuring compliance with NCAA regulations.

Equipment Maintenance:

Operate and maintain groundskeeping equipment (e.g., mowers, tractors, sprayers) and perform routine inspections and repairs as needed.

Event Support:

Collaborate with athletic staff to ensure fields are ready for games, practices, and special events, including pre- and post-event cleanup.

Safety and Compliance:

Ensure all fields meet safety standards and NCAA regulations; monitor field conditions to address hazards promptly.

Record Keeping:

Maintain logs of maintenance activities, irrigation schedules, and chemical applications for compliance and budgeting purposes.

Seasonal Tasks:

Perform seasonal field maintenance, such as winterizing irrigation systems, oversee overseeding work, and prepare fields for spring play.

Team Collaboration:

Work with coaches and facilities staff to coordinate maintenance schedules and support other campus landscaping needs as required

Qualifications Education:

High school diploma or equivalent required; associate’s or bachelor’s degree in turf management, horticulture, or a related field preferred.

Experience:

Minimum of 2-3 years of experience in athletic field maintenance or groundskeeping, preferably in a collegiate or professional sports setting.

Skills and Abilities:

Knowledge of turf management practices, irrigation systems, and infield preparation techniques. Proficiency in operating and maintaining groundskeeping equipment (e.g., mowers, tractors, line markers). Understanding of NCAA field regulations and standards for soccer, football, baseball, and softball. Strong attention to detail and ability to prioritize tasks in a fast-paced environment. Ability to work independently and as part of a team. Physical stamina to perform manual labor in various weather conditions.

Certifications:

Pesticide applicator license or ability to obtain within 6 months of hire preferred; valid driver’s license required. Essential Job Functions The role requires outdoor work in various weather conditions, including heat, cold, and rain. Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds and perform physically demanding tasks. Flexible schedule required, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, based on game and practice schedules.
