Description Building Codes Inspector I General Statement of Job:
Under general supervisor, perform skilled inspection of work in compliance with established codes governing one or more of the following areas of the building trades: electrical, building (construction and energy), mechanical, plumbing and fuel gas. Work involves performing a variety installation of workmanship, materials and safety precautions, interpretations, application and enforcement of rules and regulations relating to the construction or repair to ensure code compliance. Employee is responsible for inspecting and enforcing of work in progress and completion. Employee is responsible of plan review and specification of proposed installation to ensure code requirements are followed. Employee must exercise independent judgement in applying these standards in a variety of work situations. Employee must exercise considerable tact, courtesy and firmness in dealing with permit holder, contractors, and property owners and the general public.
Essential Job functions:
The position is responsible for conducting plan reviews and building inspections in the enforcement of residential and commercial building codes. Requires reviews of new construction plans for residential and non-residential structures; inspects new construction, additions, renovations, electrical, plumbing and mechanical upgrades and mobile homes. Issues stop-work orders when required. Responds to questions from contractors or permit holder concerning inspection results. Organizes daily inspections in order of importance. Writes up daily inspection log and maintains all necessary records and reports of inspections. Gathers evidence of code violations; prepares reports of observed code violations and deficiencies; communicate, both verbally and in writing, to contractors, property owners, architects or engineers concerning violations. Performs courtesy inspections for residential and non-residential projects. Ensures construction conforms to building, electrical, mechanical, plumbing, fuel gas codes and energy conservation regulations. Requires knowledge of state codes and laws that pertain to construction and life safety, knowledge of the principles and practices of building inspection, knowledge of county policies and procedures, knowledge of building construction materials, methods, and practices of the building trades. Requires skill in reading and interpreting plans and specifications. Requires skill in computers, interpersonal relations with oral and written communications.
Qualifications:
Knowledge and level of competence commonly associated with completion of specialized training in the field of work, in addition to basic skills typically associated with a high school education. Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the essential functions of the position.
Special Requirements:
Possession of or ability to readily obtain the appropriate state certification for the type of inspection(s) conducted within three (3) years of employment. Possession of a valid North Carolina Drivers License with a safe driving record.
Class Level:
Building Codes Inspector I – Probationary or Standard Level I in all areas. •preferred level 2 or 3 in all trades•
