Department:

The Construction/Maintenance Division of the Public Works Department provides essential services to City of Huntsville residents in a safe, efficient, prompt, and cost-effective manner. We are responsible for maintaining the efficient flow of water throughout the city to prevent flooding, erosion, and other property damage. The Construction Division is staffed with heavy equipment operators, skilled workers and truck drivers. It demolishes old and vacant buildings and installs new roads and parking areas that include small and large drainage projects.

Equipment Operator III Crew Leader Position Overview:

This is skilled work leading and overseeing the work of other Equipment Operators in a variety of assigned tasks. The incumbent may operate a variety of heavy equipment used in construction, maintenance, waste collection and repair. Work involves leading in the operation of a piece of heavy equipment at assigned work site and leading the crew in carrying out a variety of construction, repair and maintenance tasks.

Qualifications and Necessary Special Requirements:

High school diploma or GED certificate desired with some equipment training experience in the operation of a backhoe, grader, excavator, dozer, loader, dragline or similar heavy equipment or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience. Must pass the written portion of the CDL Class A within six (6) months of hire and/or promotion date. Must pass the driving test and obtain a valid CDL, Class A within twelve (12) months of hire and/or promotion date. Automatic transmission restriction will be allowed.
