STATEMENT OF DUTIES
Operates one or more types of specialized heavy highway maintenance and construction equipment and performs a variety of manual tasks in connection with such operation. May include but is not limited to operating a Gradall, front end loader, tractor and attached equipment, and tractor trailer; does related work as required.
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
Work involves responsibility for the efficient operation of specialized heavy equipment used in highway maintenance, road construction, and snow and ice operations. There is greater responsibility for the safety of others. Additional responsibilities include making minor repairs to equipment and routine servicing of the same. Supervision may be exercised over the work of Laborers and Motor Equipment Operators or other laboring class employees depending on the project. Supervision is received from the Working Supervisor who assigns tasks, and inspects the work in progress and upon completion.
EXAMPLES OF WORK
(Illustrative only) Operates excavator, road grader, tractor with attached equipment, front end loader, tractor trailer, screener/crusher and other related heavy equipment used in the construction and maintenance of highways; Operates dump truck type snowplow or power sander in the clearing of roads; Operates heavy equipment in connection with cutting banks, cutting and filling ditches, removing stumps, stripping gravel pits and related highway department tasks; Performs minor maintenance and repair work on assigned equipment; Loads and unloads vehicles; Performs a variety of simple manual tasks such as cleaning culverts, shoveling snow, painting, and road maintenance work. Supervision may be exercised over the work of Laborers and Motor Equipment Operators depending on the project.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Good knowledge of the operation and maintenance of heavy equipment; ability to service and make minor repairs and adjustments to equipment; ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions; good mechanical aptitude; dependability; good physical condition.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Three (3) years of experience as a Motor Equipment Operator or higher in construction, public works, or related industry.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENT FOR ACCEPTANCE OF APPLICATIONS
Successful candidate must possess a valid New York State CDL Class A or B license. An acceptable driving record is required at the time of appointment, and maintenance of the CDL license is required throughout employment in this position.
