Department University Police Job Purpose:

Serves as primary point of contact for all calls for emergency services through the University’s emergency communications system. This role involves responding to inquiries from the campus community and the public, dispatching calls to University Police, and coordinating with external emergency services including police, fire, and EMS. Monitoring campus safety systems such as fire and security alarms, video surveillance, and access control systems. The Dispatcher is also responsible for activating the University’s Emergency Notification System, door access control and ensuring accurate and timely communication during incidents.

Essential Duties:

Maintain clear, professional, and accurate written communication, including dispatch logs, incident reports, and records entered via telecommunications and computer systems Speak clearly and calmly under pressure; convey information efficiently and compassionately, even in high-stress or emergency situations Quickly gather, assess, and relay critical information in a clear and organized manner to ensure timely and appropriate response Operate a variety of communication and security systems-including radios, alarms, video monitors, and computer-aided dispatch software, with speed and precision Analyze incoming information rapidly and determine the best course of action, prioritizing responses based on the nature and severity of the situation. Accurately interpret verbal information, even in noisy environments, and distinguish between different sounds to identify potential threats or important cues Maintain a calm and reassuring demeanor when assisting individuals who may be agitated, emotional, intoxicated, or experiencing communication difficulties

Additional Skills Required:

Successfully complete the 40 hour APCO Basic Telecommunicator Course and other training as necessary Pass any/all background investigations and medical screenings Learn and maintain a working knowledge of University policies and procedures as they pertain to the University and law enforcement Excellent written and verbal communication skills Must be computer literate Strong problem solving and critical thinking skills Able to understand and support the Universitys Jesuit and Catholic mission and values

Minimum Education Requirements:

High School diploma or equivalent is required
