Primary Purpose of Position:
The Director of Facilities supervises, reviews, and inspects the production of the building/trades staff and Utility Workers. The position assists the Executive Director with supervision of capital projects and contract personnel. This position requires working knowledge of acceptable standard practices and constantly changing methods in the preservation of historic buildings and the carpentry trade. The Director of Facilities must have the ability to oversee multiple projects simultaneously. Additionally, this position will coordinate the branch’s response to natural disasters and other emergency situations. Key Responsibilities include but are not limited to: Plan, schedule, and supervise maintenance and construction activities across the site Supervise building/trades staff and utility workers Ensure all work on historic buildings follow preservation guidelines Supervise routine and preventative maintenance on HVAC systems, plumbing, electrical, carpentry, and masonry Conduct regular inspections of buildings and grounds to assess conditions and identify issues Develop maintenance budgets and assist in capital improvement planning Respond to emergency maintenance needs, including after-hours issues if necessary Coordinate the branch’s response to natural disasters and other emergency situations
Position/Physical Requirements:
Must be able to work Monday – Friday 8 AM – 5 PM with weekend and evening as required to meet the needs of the site. Must be able to exert up to 100 lbs. of force occasionally, 50 lbs. of force frequently, and 10 lbs. of force constantly to move objects with or without reasonable accommodation. Must be able to bend, lift, stoop, stretch, and climb stairs and ladders. Must have a valid driver’s license issued from within the United States or be able to obtain one within 90 days of employment. Must be comfortable and familiar with using Microsoft Office applications.

May require current certification by the EPA as a Type I, II, III or Universal technician as required by 40 CFR part 82, subpart F.
Section/Unit Description:
The Facilities Branch is responsible for the preservation, maintenance, and cleaning of all public facilities including the Governor’s Palace, house museum interiors and exteriors, the North Carolina History Center, as well as staff facilities. The branch includes skilled professionals, maintenance mechanics, and building and environmental staff. The Facilities staff perform maintenance, construction, preservation, and repairs to the interior and exterior of all buildings on site, as well as repair to and preservation of some outdoor elements. The Palace Stewards (Housekeepers) provide maintenance and housekeeping services for all public and staff buildings. This branch provides support for special events and exhibits at Tryon Palace.
