Reporting to the Senior Vice President of HealthcareDevelopment, with a dotted line reporting to the Chief HospitalExecutive (CHE), the Executive Director of Development functions asthe lead development officer for the general and active managementof the affairs of the hospital foundation. Responsibilities includeworking collaboratively with the CHE to ensure the development andexecution of approved fundraising plans and a comprehensive,integrated fundraising program, as well as monitoring of financialassets and fund allocation, in consultation with the hospitalfoundation Board and HMH Foundation Operations. The ExecutiveDirector provides leadership to the board to motivate and execute acomprehensive, compelling and successful fundraising plan. Thisposition will spend a majority of the time on-site.
Responsibilities A day in the life of an Executive Director ofDevelopment at Hackensack Meridian Health includes:
- Incollaboration with the CHE and Senior Vice President of HealthcareDevelopment, manage the affairs of the hospital foundation,including but not limited to: Developing, executing and monitoringa comprehensive development program; setting and achieving goals;legal, financial and general management; Board management andtrustee recruitment.
- Responsible for setting realistic,challenging goals and directing major gift activity aimed atmeeting those goals within budget.
- Develop and maintain seniorlevel communication with CHE, Board of Trustees and Senior VicePresident of Healthcare Development to align priorities, goals andstrategies in the creation and implementation of a comprehensivedevelopment program for the hospital.
Maintain high visibility withand participate in management groups and maintain a regularphysical presence at the medical center. Ensure that fund raisingstrategies are consistent with hospital and network goals and workclosely with leaders on collaborative projects.
- Manage aportfolio of principal and major gift donors and prospects. Createand execute cultivation, solicitation and stewardship strategiesfor donors and prospects. Work closely with affiliated foundationsto ensure appropriate solicitation and minimal duplication incrossover catchment areas.
- Provide leadership and support to thehospital foundation Board of Trustees.
Recruit and orient newtrustees, prepare annual budgets and plans, report regularly toboard on progress against goals, motivate Board effectiveness andensure the effective involvement of trustees with all hospitalfoundation activities. Effectively articulate strategy to theboard, motivate trustees and direct board activities necessary toachieve results.
- Supervise and direct the activities of thehospital foundation staff, helping to set and monitor goals, manageprospects and close gifts.
- Oversee the coordination of activitieswith planned giving, annual fund, grants and strategic eventsdepartments for the successful implementation of related programsand achievement of goals in these areas.
- Engage board members andfriends to host awareness building and networking forums.
Recruithosts for and coordinate appropriate cultivation gatherings ofprospects at various educational, social and hospitality events.
Manage cultivation events and internal constituency givingsubcommittees and oversee management.
- Collaborate effectively aspart of the hospital¿s leadership team to ensure that thehospital¿s philanthropy objectives are met through developingimportant relationships with physicians, nurses and staff topromote a culture of philanthropy and grateful patient prospectpipeline.
- Work collaboratively with physicians and helps toengage grateful patients in fundraising for the hospital. Mustmaintain patient confidentiality.
- Serve as needed on an on-callbasis (including nights and weekends) for the Friends of theFoundation (FOF) program.
Act as a liaison between program members,the Foundation, and clinicians and administrators, navigating thehealth care system on behalf of FOF program members, nurturingdonor relationships, and providing continuity of a consistentlyhigh level of service. Express genuine compassion and ability tomaintain confidentiality.
- If applicable, participate in auxiliarymeetings and events to help achieve compliance and to providefunding information, as well as secure auxiliary funding.
- Otherduties and/or projects as assigned.
- Adheres to HMH Organizationalcompetencies and standards of behavior.
Qualifications Education,Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:
- Ten or more years ofprofessional experience in the development field.
- Demonstratedsuccess with major gifts and capital campaigns.
- Established trackrecord closing six- and seven-figure gifts independently.
- Bachelors degree in a related field.
- Highly functional withMicrosoft Office Suite.
- Highly articulate and professional withstrong oral and written communication skills.
Education, Knowledge,Skills and Abilities Preferred:
- Experience managing legal,financial, and general management responsibilities for anot-for-profit organization.
- Masters degree or specializedcertification.
- Certified Fund Raising Executive (CFRE).
- Experience in a healthcare environment, preferably a hospitalsystem.
- Experience working with Raisers Edge and/or otherfundraising/CRM management software.
