As the Head of CorporateStrategy, you will play a pivotal role in shaping Upwork’slong-term strategic direction. Reporting to the Vice President ofStrategy, Corporate Development, and Partnerships, this leader willpartner with Upwork’s senior and executive leadership to developand execute initiatives that enhance Upwork’s market position,drive growth, and increase shareholder value. The CorporateStrategy team is part of a broader strategy and growth functionresponsible for strategy creation, M&A and investment activity,business development, and financial/payment partnerships. Thishigh-visibility role provides the opportunity to directly impactUpwork’s long-term success and value creation. Responsibilities
- Corporate Strategy Development o Drive the development of Upwork’scorporate strategy, focusing on 3-5 year horizons, annual planning,and addressing key business challenges.
o Partner with seniorleaders across business units to identify and align on strategicpriorities that drive growth and enhance market competitiveness. oSupport strategic planning by conducting scenario analyses andrecommending actionable initiatives.
- Thought Leadership o Provideactionable insights and recommendations to senior leadership onemerging trends, technologies, and opportunities that align withUpwork’s goals.
o Act as a strategic advisor to leaders across theorganization, offering guidance on critical decisions andinitiatives. o Contribute to a culture of innovation by identifyingand advocating for new business opportunities and go-to-marketstrategies.
- Research & Analysis o Conduct rigorous qualitativeand quantitative analyses to address key strategic questions,uncover insights, and inform decision-making. o Lead efforts toanalyze market dynamics, competitive positioning, and emergingopportunities to ensure Upwork remains a market leader. o Ownaddressable market (TAM) analyses, identifying growth potential andstrategic areas for investment.
- Project Management & Execution oManage cross-functional initiatives that align corporate strategywith operational execution and financial planning.
o Work closelywith FP&A, Analytics, and Business Units to integrate strategyinto long-term planning and ensure alignment with company goals. oPrepare materials for key stakeholders, including quarterly boardpresentations, to communicate progress and insights.
- TeamLeadership o Manage and mentor a team of strategy professionals,fostering a collaborative environment that drives high-qualityoutputs and professional growth.
o Encourage cross-functionalcollaboration to ensure strategic initiatives are well-informed andexecutable. o Act as a role model for Upwork’s values, promoting aresults-driven, innovative, and inclusive culture. What it takes tocatch our eye
- 12 years of experience in corporate strategy,management consulting, investment banking or a related field
- Aproven track record of strategic development in a fast-paced,dynamic environment, preferably in technology, marketplaces, orHuman Capital Management.
- Exceptional analytical and strategicthinking skills, with the ability to translate complex ideas intoactionable strategies.
- Strong leadership and team managementskills, with experience building and mentoring high-performingteams.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with theability to influence and collaborate across all levels of theorganization.
- Organized, structured, and highly proactive with astrong sense of ownership and accountability.
- MBA or quantitativedegree from a top school is preferred.
