Understanding of metal types, grades, and specifications (e.g., carbon steel, stainless, aluminum). Familiarity with tolerances, machining needs, and fabrication processes like welding, cutting, forming. Awareness of market trends in raw materials (especially steel prices and supply chain issues). Ability to negotiate pricing , payment terms, and delivery schedules. Confident handling of vendor relationships to get cost-effective deals without compromising quality. Ensures accurate specifications in purchase orders (thickness, length, finish, etc.). Double-checks mill certifications, delivery quantities, and invoice matching. Able to manage multiple purchase orders while staying ahead of project timelines. Understands which materials are critical-path and prioritizes accordingly. Existing relationships with reliable steel suppliers, tooling vendors, and MRO suppliers . Can source hard-to-find or custom materials or find alternate vendors quickly. Proficient in inventory and procurement systems (like Epicor, SAP, Oracle, JobBOSS , etc.). Ensures data integrity for on-hand levels, reorder points, and job cost tracking . Looks for cost-saving opportunities (e.g., bulk purchases, vendor consolidation). Analyzes usage trends and flags inefficiencies. Works closely with engineering, production, and quality teams to understand material needs. Communicates clearly with vendors and handles conflict diplomatically. Understands ISO, 9001, or other industry quality standards , if applicable. Ensures materials meet spec and maintains proper documentation (e.g., certs, COAs). Can react to supply chain disruptions , back-orders, or unexpected material needs. Finds creative solutions under pressure (e.g., alternate materials, just-in-time buys). APICS/CPIM or CPSM certification is a plus. Experience in lean manufacturing or just-in-time (JIT) systems is beneficial. #IND456
