TRANSPORTATION DEPARTMENT POSITION PURPOSE
The Director of Transportation Logistics and Technology oversees the district’s transportation technology staff and fleet operations, ensuring safe and efficient student transportation. Responsibilities include managing routing software provided by the South Carolina Department of Education, maintaining data accuracy through nightly PowerSchool imports, and ensuring compliance with state standards. The Director also manages vehicle assignments, tracks maintenance across all district fleets, and uses fleet software to guide vehicle replacement and procurement decisions.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Fleet Management In conjunction with the Head of Transportation, developing and managing the fleet budget, including vehicle acquisition, maintenance, and fuel costs. Procuring vehicles through lease, purchase, or other means, ensuring they meet company requirements. Overseeing and scheduling regular inspections, maintenance, and servicing to minimize downtime. Managing the sale or disposal of vehicles when they reach the end of their useful life. Implementing and enforcing safety protocols and administrative regulations to ensure the safety of drivers, passengers and other road users. Ensuring compliance with all applicable regulations, including those related to vehicle maintenance, driver safety, transportation, and any other local, state, or federal requirements. Supervise and evaluate mechanics. Create regular reports to the Chief Operations Officer, Operations Committee and Superintendent on the condition of the District’s fleet IT and Logistics Supervision Oversee the planning, execution, and completion of IT projects, routing software, fleet management software, etc., often involving budgeting and resource allocation in conjunction with the Head of Transportation. Identifying and developing IT strategies that align with the District’s goals. Managing computer systems, networks, and applications, ensuring their proper functioning and security. Collaborating with various departments to ensure the IT needs of Transportation and the District are aligned. Providing technical assistance to end-users, troubleshooting problems, and resolving issues. Developing and implementing strategies to ensure business continuity in case of system failures or disasters. Ensuring that IT operations adhere to relevant regulations and industry standards. Budget and vendor management in collaboration with the Head of Transportation. Oversight and collaboration in the areas of Routing and IT functions. Maintaining regular and consistent attendance and punctuality. Updates database with new and/or changing route information for the purpose of providing information for decision making and for enhancing student transportation services. Designing, coordinating and implementing both regular and special education routing. Collaborates with staff and/or zoning personnel in developing routes and stops for the purpose of determining route requirements. Creating routing solutions for the safe and efficient transport of students and staff. Preparation of presentations, reports, training materials, and other written/visual communications based on data and other metrics.
ADDITIONAL DUTIES
Performs other related tasks as assigned by the Head of Transportation or Deputy Director of Transportation, Superintendent or other district office administrator as designated by the Superintendent.
QUALIFICATIONS
High school diploma or general education degree (GED) required, Associate’s/Bachelor’s degree preferred. Valid Driver’s License and Evidence of Insurability Valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) to operate a school bus and Federal School Bus Endorsement.
EXPERIENCE
Must have acceptable 10-year driving record. Must be able to pass criminal background check. Job related experience is required.
