Position Description
Advertised Job Summary The faculty of the School of Visual Art and Design at the University of South Carolina, Columbia campus, invites applications for a full time, professional-track position at the rank of Senior Instructor to begin August 16, 2025. The position is a 9-month appointment with a teaching load of 8 courses for the academic year. This is an annual appointment that may be renewed contingent upon Dean’s approval, satisfactory performance, departmental needs, and the availability of funding.
The position’s teaching load is a 4/4 (fall/spring) with 10% of time allocated to service (i.e., attending studio area and school meetings, collaborating with faculty on curriculum matters, and occasional service on school levelmittees).
Required Education and Experience The position requires an MFA degree in studio art and at least six years of full-time university level teaching experience in the discipline of drawing
Preferred Qualifications The successful candidate will have an active studio art practice and exhibition record in the field and be able to demonstrate an engagement with current trends in drawing, including interdisciplinary approaches that connect drawing to other media. The candidate should demonstrate that they are versed in pedagogical approaches to drawing, including a strong foundation in observational drawing and awareness of interdisciplinary and/or experimental drawing practices. The candidate should have the proven ability to teach drawing at multiple skill levels, from foundational courses for general studio art students and nonmajors, to advanced specialized instruction for students concentrating in the discipline. The candidate should be able to demonstrate expertise in teaching fundamental drawing skills such as perspective, proportion,position, value structure, and diverse mark-making techniques, and have a familiarity with anatomy and experience teaching figure drawing. The successful candidate will also be able to demonstrate amitment to mentoring students in portfolio development and professional practices
