Job Description
English Learner (EL) Instructional Coach
Medford High School
Grades 9 – 12

Nature and Scope:

Provide instructional coaching and job embedded professional development to content teachers and EL teachers in best practices serving English learners.
Support rigorous content curriculum using WIDA English Language Development Standards and Common Core State Standards for ELs in grades 9-12.
Assist teachers in planning scaffolded lessons that meet the linguistic needs of English learners.
Model well-structured lessons in a variety of content areas.
Co-plan and co-teach lessons that include effective strategies for differentiating instruction for ELs.
Collaborate and communicate with content teachers to align instruction and support with students’ English language development and classroom instructional needs.
Collaborate and communicate with the school’s instructional leadership team, special education staff, district instructional coaches and administration to ensure ELs receive language support and other forms of academic assistance.
Lead or support professional development focused on EL achievement.
Serve as a resource for culturally and linguistically responsive practices that promote inclusion and engagement of EL students and families.
Support the District English Learner Advisory Council (DELAC).
Participate in faculty, department, and/or district committees and meetings.
Provide support with EL Program compliance and maintain records and student data as needed by the ELL/Title III department.
Support the building principal with ACCESS testing.
Foster a culture of high expectations and belonging for English learners within the school community.

Qualifications:

Valid Massachusetts teacher certification in ESL at the appropriate grade levels.
Successful teaching experience with newcomer EL students as well as other levels of English proficiency.
Familiarity with WIDA English Language Proficiency Standards and ACCESS testing
Ability to communicate effectively with students, teachers, parents and administrators
Demonstrate a commitment to excellence, equity, and high expectations for all students with an emphasis on building on the strengths that students bring to the teaching/learning process
Ability to collect and interpret data for instructional purposes
Excellent written and oral communications skills in English
Proficiency in a language other than English is preferred
