POSITION SUMMARY:
The ideal candidate will play a pivotal role in facilitating students’ growth and development in English Language Arts (ELA). The primary responsibility will be to create a nurturing and engaging learning environment that promotes literacy, critical thinking, and effective communication skills. They will work collaboratively with students, parents, and colleagues to ensure academic excellence and foster a love for learning.
Monitoring and assessing of progress:
Use a variety of assessment tools and strategies to gather data to monitor student mastery of instructional content, to improve instruction, and to assess the comparative performance of subgroups within the classroom. Reflect on practice in collaboration with administrators and colleagues, monitor personal and professional growth, and pursue professional development in needed areas. Perform relevant tasks and duties assigned by the Principal.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Curriculum Development:
Design and implement a comprehensive and standards-aligned ELA curriculum, incorporating the Massachusetts curriculum frameworks and district guidelines.
Lesson Planning:
Develop engaging and differentiated lesson plans, instructional materials, and learning activities that cater to the diverse needs and abilities of students.
Reading and Writing Instruction:
Teach and model effective reading and writing strategies, including comprehension, fluency, vocabulary development, grammar, and punctuation.
Literacy Skills Development:
Foster students’ literacy skills by promoting active reading, critical thinking, interpretation of texts, and written expression.
Assessment and Progress Monitoring:
Regularly assess student progress and achievement using formative and summative assessments, providing timely feedback and implementing strategies to address individual learning needs.
Differentiated Instruction:
Implement instructional strategies and interventions to meet the diverse needs of students, including those with learning differences, English language learners, and gifted students.
Classroom Management:
Establish and maintain a positive and inclusive classroom environment, managing student behavior, fostering respect, and promoting a culture of collaboration and mutual support.
Technology Integration:
Utilize educational technology tools and resources to enhance ELA instruction, promote digital literacy, and support student engagement and learning.
Parent Communication:
Maintain open lines of communication with parents/guardians, providing regular updates on student progress, hosting parent-teacher conferences, and collaborating to support student learning and growth.
Professional Collaboration:
Collaborate with colleagues within the ELA department and across other disciplines to develop integrated instructional approaches, share best practices, and contribute to the school community.
Professional Development:
Engage in continuous professional growth by attending workshops, conferences, and professional development opportunities to stay updated with the latest research and pedagogical trends in ELA instruction.
School and Community Involvement:
Actively participate in school-wide events, committees, and professional learning communities, and contribute to the broader educational community.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPECTATIONS
Education:
Hold a bachelor’s degree in education or a related field. Possessing a master’s degree in education or a relevant subject area is preferred.
Certification:
Hold a valid elementary Massachusetts teaching license.
Experience:
Have prior experience working as a classroom teacher, preferably in Grade 5 or within the elementary school setting. Experience teaching ELA is highly desirable.
Content Knowledge:
Demonstrate a strong understanding of ELA concepts, instructional strategies, and assessment techniques. Familiarity with the Massachusetts curriculum frameworks for ELA is important.
Literacy Instruction:
Possess expertise in teaching reading comprehension, writing skills, vocabulary development, grammar, and language conventions.
Differentiated Instruction:
Have the ability to differentiate instruction to meet the diverse needs of students, tailoring teaching approaches and materials accordingly.
Classroom Management:
Exhibit excellent classroom management skills, fostering a positive and inclusive learning environment that supports student engagement and academic growth.
Communication:
Possess exceptional verbal and written communication skills to effectively engage with students, parents, colleagues, and the broader school community.
Technology Skills:
Demonstrate proficiency in integrating technology into ELA instruction, utilizing educational apps, online resources, and digital tools to enhance teaching and learning experiences.
Collaboration:
Show a willingness to collaborate and work as part of a team, actively participating. Current authorization to work in the United States.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Ability to stand for extended periods, lift (up to 50 lbs.), and perform repetitive motions. Frequent bending, crouching, stooping, and stretching. Standing or walking for the entirety of an 8-hour shift. Must be able to work in a fast-paced environment requiring multitasking and attention to detail.

Compensation and Benefits:
Full-Time, Exempt, Annual position that is compensated based on experience and is not on a salary scale.
