FACULTY VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT
The Japanese Program at Hunter College of The City University of New York (https://hunter.cuny.edu/artsci/classical-and-oriental-studies/japanese-studies/) invites applications for a position at the rank of Doctoral Lecturer in Japanese, starting in Fall 2025. This is a full-time appointment with a renewable contract and eligibility for a Certificate of Continuous Service. The teaching load is four courses per semester. The successful candidate will be expected to teach courses in Japanese culture at the college level; create and teach new courses as needed; and perform faculty and administrative duties for the program. These duties will include coordinating events and class schedules each semester; assisting with curricular development, extracurricular activies, and study-abroad programs; cultivating and maintaining relationships with outside organizations, partners, and individuals (such as the Consulate General of Japan and Japan Foundation). QUALIFICATIONS
? PhD in Japanese Culture or related field ? 5-7 years? experience teaching Japanese culture courses at the college level, including the design of innovative courses that connect students to a diverge range of Japanese cultural phenomena such as art, drama, literature, philosophy, history, film, and music ? Must be fluent in English ? Japanese language ability equivalent or above L3 JLPT ? Also required are the ability to teach successfully, demonstrated scholarship or achievement, and ability to cooperate with others for the good of the institution.
PREFERRED/OTHER QUALIFICATIONS
? 5-7 years of demonstrated experience in leadership roles in academic settings including: Committee appointments at the college level, board/team membership in Japanese academic organizations, etc. ? Experience as a practitioner in traditional or contemporary Japanese performance, dance, music, art, etc., and evidence or networking or collaborating with Japanese artists ? Experience building extra-curricular activities including symposia, student events, Japanese Program events, and hosting guest lecturers ? Experience leading student-driven interdepartmental projects in Japanese performance, music, dance, and other practical application of traditional or contemporary Japanese culture. ? Familiarity with and/or connections to NYC Japanese cultural institutions, businesses, government organizations, artists, and individuals.
COMPENSATION
Salary is commensurate with academic accomplishments and experience within the range: $84,440
- $88,998 CUNY is in the process of implementing salary schedule increases.
Once implemented, salaries of eligible employees will be adjusted by 6.09% with additional increases of 3.25% effective 9/1/2025 and 3.5% effective 9/1/26, in accordance with the terms of the
PSC-CUNY
