The Resident Director & HEOP Advisor at Mount Saint Mary College holds a dual role that combines key responsibilities in both Residence Life and the Higher Education Opportunity Program (HEOP). This position provides comprehensive support for the academic and personal development of first-year students, while also advising and mentoring HEOP students. The individual in this position is expected to effectively manage residential life duties, foster a supportive community, and coordinate HEOP initiatives, all while maintaining a presence on campus and being actively engaged with students in both areas.

Resident Director Responsibilities:
Staff Development & Supervision:
Provide oversight for the orderly operation of a first-year residence hall housing approximately 150 residents.
Train, supervise, and evaluate a team of Resident Assistants (RAs) to ensure effective student support and community development.
Assist RAs in creating programming that fosters academic and personal success.
Facilitate weekly 1:1 meetings with RAs and conduct RA team meetings.
Ensure a safe and supportive living environment, offering guidance and support to residents.
On-Call Responsibilities:
Participate in the RD on-call duty rotation as scheduled, responding to emergencies and incidents promptly and responsibly.
Maintain a thorough understanding of and uphold all College and Housing policies and procedures.
Document all incidents in a timely and accurate manner.
Administrative & Community Development:
Develop and facilitate RA training sessions during August and January RA Training.
Oversee and evaluate residence hall programs, activities, and events.
Act as a liaison between the Residence Life Office and other college offices, collaborating with campus partners to support students’ well-being.
Conduct monthly health/safety inspections and closing/opening inspections of buildings.
Maintain daily office hours within the residence hall and actively participate in departmental meetings and events.
HEOP Advisor Responsibilities:
Academic Advising & Support:
Serve as a secondary academic advisor to HEOP students, working alongside their faculty advisor to ensure students’ academic success.
Counsel students on academic, financial, residential, and personal issues, providing holistic support to promote retention and success.
Monitor student progress, maintain academic records, and submit relevant data to the HEOP Director/Associate Director as needed.
Organize co-curricular activities to promote student retention and development.
Program Coordination & Recruitment:
Assist in the coordination and implementation of the Summer Bridge Program, providing support to incoming HEOP students.
Plan and execute community outreach and recruitment events with local high schools and student service organizations.
Advise and lead the HEOP leadership council, ensuring active student participation and leadership development within the program.
Supervisory responsibilities
Resident Director Supervisory Duties:
Supervise and provide guidance to a team of Resident Assistants (RAs) in the residence hall, ensuring they effectively support residents and promote a positive living environment.
Conduct regular one-on-one meetings with RAs to assess their performance, provide feedback, and foster their professional development.
Evaluate RA performance and assist in the development of RA training materials and programming that enhances students’ personal and academic growth.
HEOP Advisor Supervisory Duties:
Serve as the primary advisor for the HEOP Leadership Council, providing mentorship and support to student leaders within the program.
Oversee and guide student-led initiatives and co-curricular activities related to HEOP retention and development.

Cubicles, open desks, or private offices with access to necessary tools like computers, phones, and office supplies.

Working from home or another location with access to virtual communication platforms and necessary technology.

Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk or workstation.
Typing/Computer Use:
Frequent use of a computer keyboard and mouse.
Vision Requirements:
Ability to read and view screens for extended periods.
Speaking/Hearing:
Regular communication with coworkers and clients in person, over the phone, or via video calls.
Lifting/Carrying:
Occasionally lifting or moving items up to 10-15 pounds, such as office supplies, laptops, or documents.
Reaching/Bending:
Periodic reaching for or bending to access files, supplies, or equipment.
Mobility:
Walking short distances within the office or to meeting rooms.
Travel required While the position is primarily campus-based, there may be occasional off-site trips related to HEOP recruitment events, student development activities, or community outreach programs.
Any travel will be limited and planned in advance to ensure minimal disruption to primary responsibilities.
Required education and experience
A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution.
Previous experience in Residence Life/Student Affairs and academic advising or coaching is required.
Strong communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
Proven ability to collaborate with campus departments such as Counseling, Disability Services, and Student Success.
A general understanding of student retention theory, particularly for first-generation and historically disadvantaged students.
Proficiency in MS Office suite and other relevant software.
Willingness to work evenings and weekends as necessary and the full month of July for the HEOP Summer Academic Institute. Position Details
This is a full time, twelve-month position. Compensation includes a furnished apartment with utilities, cable, and a meal plan (when school is in session). Work authorization/security clearance requirements
Must be authorized to work in the United States. MSMC does not sponsor employment visas at this time.
