DEFINITION
To provide classroom and field instruction to students through lecture, demonstration, laboratory and field exercises, handouts, responding to questions, and testing. Perform a variety of duties involved in assisting with preparation of instructional materials, field trips and laboratory demonstrations; and to perform various instructional support services directly related to the Marine Technology program.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
Receives immediate to general supervision from the Marine Technology Program Director and higher-level academic staff. May exercise functional and technical supervision over instructional assistants and/or technicians. Duties & Responsibilities (Essential Functions)

Essential Functions:
Prepare and deliver instruction in classroom, lab, and field settings. Develop lesson plans, schedule activities, and create supplemental materials. Assess lesson effectiveness, refine formats, and evaluate textbooks for future use. Develop, prepare, and proctor assignments, quizzes, tests, and exams to evaluate student performance; correct and grade student work; explain and clarify student questions about assignments; and record individual scores. Develop Marine Biology, Marine Zoology, Ichthyology, and Oceanography related field and laboratory exercises and assignments to provide hands on experience; develop data sheets and/or databases to correspond with exercises; circulate, throughout the laboratory, classroom, shop or field collection area during field/lab exercises to assist students with work; grade and record individual scores. Provide classroom and field instruction and demonstrations on various laboratory and field sampling equipment, instrumentation, and procedures to include but not limited to trawls, seines, plankton nets, dredges, cast nets, water samplers, CTDs, water quality sensors, microscopes; marine organism identification, morphometrics, meristics, dissection, and preservation; fish tagging and tracking; otolith removal; aquarium husbandry; and sediment and water sampling and analysis. Demonstrate proper and safe use of all equipment; inform students and oversee laboratory/field safety procedures. Maintain clear and prompt communication with students via classroom interactions, email, and online Learning Management System; provide tutoring where appropriate. Prepare, assemble, and help maintain equipment and instructional materials for use in biological and scientific field activities. Assist with cleaning and maintaining an assigned laboratory facility; assist with preparing and assembling equipment and instructional materials for use in laboratory projects and exercises, and in the classroom. Assist in ordering, preparing, and maintaining inventories of supplies, instructional materials, and equipment; maintain proper rotation and storage of materials. Serve as instructor and student supervisor during multiple training cruises per year aboard an ocean-going, research vessel for up to 10 days per trip. Assist with preparing instructional lesson plans and materials for use on student offshore training cruises. Maintain accurate records of student attendance and performance; maintain other records and databases according to program needs or accreditation requirements. Pursue ongoing education in Marine Biology, Marine Zoology, and Oceanography, integrating new knowledge into coursework and field experiences. Stay current with academic advancements through workshops, seminars, and professional development programs. Participate in curriculum development, evaluation, and change; attend faculty meetings as required. Participate on college committees and in other institutional activities and programs. Maintain records on student graduation and employment. Fill in for other instructors as needed. May act as an academic advisor and counselor to students; provide individual assistance to students outside of the classroom as needed. Assist in the recruitment of students from the community. Demonstrate competence regarding the handling of hazardous substances such as formaldehyde; continually undergo training and train student in such procedures. Demonstrate community involvement and/or industry involvement to maintain a network of employers and community professionals to bolster and update classroom content, as well as preserve and grow relationships with future employers of the program’s graduates. Participate in various activities and operations of the Marine Technology Program; perform related duties and responsibilities as required. Qualifications
QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of:
Classroom and laboratory instructional techniques and procedures; understanding of the fundamentals of effective communication and effective instruction; basic tutorial techniques. Principles and techniques involved in test development and administration. Principles and procedures of academic and instructional program development and administration in the areas of assignment. Safe operational techniques of laboratory equipment and instrumentation used in training students. Marine flora and fauna identification specifically of organisms indigenous to coastal waters of the Southeast United States. Emphasis on identification of local fishes. Knowledge of and experience with sampling gear used to collect and evaluate marine flora, fauna, seawater, and sediments. Biological sampling, dissection, and preservation techniques, marine instrumentation, and set-up and maintenance of marine aquaria. Comprehensive understanding of the world’s oceans including physical, chemical, biological, and geological characteristics, as well as relationships between these aspects. Knowledge of ocean and atmospheric circulation, marine ecosystems, coastal processes, plate tectonics, seafloor geology, seawater chemistry, marine resources, and global marine environmental issues. Current scientific knowledge, research, and development in fields related to marine biology, fisheries, oceanography, and marine technology. Current and emerging technologies and industry trends pertaining to student job placement in fields related to marine biology, fisheries, oceanography, and marine technology. Local, regional, or global industry, higher education, and research opportunities for active students and post-graduation students. Pertinent Federal, State, and local laws, codes, and regulations, specifically as they relate to fisheries and environmental sampling. Principles and procedures of record keeping. Computer literate, able to navigate in a Microsoft Windows environment. Basic Microsoft office suite programs Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, and web publishing software.
Ability to:
Safely work at sea aboard a research vessel for up to 10 days at a time. Safely operate small boats. Teach marine technology subject matter to students. Operate and teach the use of various biological sampling gears and software analysis packages. Maintain accurate records. Work independently in the absence of supervision. Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with department faculty and staff. Minimum Education, License or Certificate:
Master’s degree or higher in Marine Biology or another related field. NC Driver’s License with a clear driving record.
Minimum Experience:
1-3 years of formal classroom teaching experience in higher education. 1-3 years of work experience in a biological or marine technology setting. Experience working on research vessels. Experience with biological sampling and data analysis. Experience with marine instrumentation and sampling equipment. Experience with general laboratory protocols and safety procedures. Experience trailering, launching, and operating small boats.
Preferred Education/Training, Experience, Skills:
3 plus years of experience in an instructional setting as a tutor, TA, or instructor; experience with internet-based delivery of some course material is desirable. 3 plus years planning and conducting marine environment or fisheries related field surveys. 3 plus years of experience utilizing biological sampling equipment and analyzing fisheries data. 3 plus years of experience training, mentoring, or managing junior colleagues in a job pertinent to marine biology, marine technology, oceanography, or similar disciplines Familiarity or established relationships with

Wildlife, NCDCM, NOAA, NMFS, USEPA, Cape Fear River Watch and/or other related agencies. US Coast Guard OUPV license or ability to obtain OUPV license within a year. Intermediate to Advanced experience with Geographic Information Systems software, Arc Map Pro, Arc Map Online, and/or CAD. Intermediate to Advanced experience with coding languages and/or statistical computing and graphics such as Python, Java, R, etc. Knowledge of topographic maps and bathymetric chart basics, including symbols, contours, elevations, coordinate systems, and basic survey instruments, modeling, and field projects.
