Scope of Position In therole of Metallurgical Engineer, as an entry level engineer recentcollege graduate, you will function as a metallurgical specialiston projects in all stages of innovation for all Corning businesses.
Day-to-Day Responsibilities Provide technical solutions to a widerange of difficult materials-related process and product problems.
Work independently, under general direction, to determine anddevelop approach to solutions. Design and carry out laboratorytests and simulations and production experiments to gainfundamental understanding, test potential solutions and solvematerials-related issues. Work collaboratively with scientists,engineers and plant personnel and direct activities of labpersonnel. Conduct failure analyses to determine root cause anddevelop, test and recommend permanent and efficient solutions.
Develop and write metal specifications. Identify, select andqualify vendors. Flexibility is required as we travel approximately20-30%, domestically and internationally. Requirements We require aBS in a materials-related field, preferably metallurgy, with 0-2years of relevant metal or materials development, engineering orprocessing experience. Broad metallurgical background andexperience, including knowledge of wide range of metals and alloys,physical and chemical metallurgy, material processing, such asmelting, hot/ cold working, casting, heat treating, and impact onmaterial properties and uses, coating processes, such as PVD, CVD,electro and electroless plating, and welding. Strong engineeringskill base, including understanding of basic strength of materialscalculations, corrosion and electrochemistry, heat transfer anddiffusion calculations, failure analysis techniques. Technicalcuriosity with rigorous problem-solving skills. Comfortable withprojects in laboratory to manufacturing environment. Goodinterpersonal skills, including ability to work in a consultantrole, as a great teammate, with a range of co-workers from hourlyto management, and within a global organization, across multiplecultures and organizations. Strong written and verbal communicationAdaptable and capable of managing multiple projects Desired SkillsIn depth understanding of one or more of the following areas:refractory and precious metals, metallurgical thermodynamics, hightemperature corrosion and oxidation, metallic and ceramic coatings,applied electrochemistry or metal forming (sheet rolling). ProjectManagement skill set This position does not support immigrationsponsorship. The range for this position is $62,955.00 – $86,564.00assuming full time status. Starting pay for the successfulapplicant is dependent on a variety of job-related factors,including but not limited to geographic location, market demands,experience, training, and education.
