DISTRICT ACCOUNTANT DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OFTHE CLASS
This is a professional position involving responsibilityfor the performance of accounting duties for a school districtaccording to established accounting procedures and practices. Theincumbent oversees financial transactions, installation andmaintenance of accounting systems, business office procedures andpreparation of reports and fiscal analyses. The work is performedunder the general supervision of the Business Manager according togeneral guidelines established by the School Board or DistrictSuperintendent with considerable leeway allowed for the exercise ofindependent judgment in planning and carrying out assignments.
Supervision may be exercised over the work of subordinatepersonnel. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

Incumbents in thistitle may perform some or all of the following, as well as otherrelated activities not described. Performs general accountingduties such as maintaining a general ledger, making journalentries, advising supervisors regarding appropriate balances andfund transfers, and reconciling trial balances, bank statements andaccounts; Assists in the development and implementation of newaccounting procedures and systems in order to provide a clear audittrail of financial transactions; Prepares a variety of tax,financial and statistical reports and analyses to comply withState, Federal and local requirements; Assists in the organizationand preparation of the school district annual budget includingestimation of revenues and appropriations; Develops and implementsa system for the inventory of fixed assets; Acts as liaison withinternal and external auditors; Participates in meetings concerningequipment purchases, capital construction and other expenditureswhich have an impact on school district finances; Keeps informed ofeconomic trends and advises responsible officials regardingfinancial planning and investments; Recommends ways of reducingoperating costs and increasing revenues based on knowledge ofreimbursement formulas, market trends, school operating proceduresand legislative development; May coordinate the introduction andmaintenance of data processing operations, including thepreparation of schedules, in relation to accounting functions.
FULLPERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONALCHARACTERISTICS
Good knowledge of modern accounting principles,practices and terminology, particularly as they relate togovernmental accounting; good knowledge of the applicable laws,rules and regulations governing school district accounting; goodknowledge of financial administration and budgeting reporting;working knowledge of office terminology, practices, procedures andequipment; ability to prepare, analyze and review financial andstatistical records, reports and statements; ability to maintainaccounting records including general journals and ledgers; abilityto understand and interpret complex written material; ability toexpress oneself clearly both orally and in writing; good judgment;initiative; accuracy.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Possession of aBachelor’s Degree in Accounting or closely related field includingor supplemented by 18 semester credit hours in accounting.
