M Job Description Purpose:
Under the direction of supervisor performs clinical laboratory procedures and related functions, which require technical skill in laboratory and rotate weekends and shifts based on laboratory needs and able to work on holidays.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities:
The Laboratory Technologist Lv III is charged with and responsible for: Reports to section supervisors, follow laboratory’s procedures for specimen handling and processing, test analyses, reporting and maintaining records of test examinations and whenever test systems are not within the laboratory’s established acceptable levels of performance.
Follow standard precautions, laboratory safety rules, use appropriate Personal Protective equipment (PPE), Decontaminate the bench surfaces and equipment and does proper documentation.
Adheres to infection control, safety and patient privacy protocols, work on laboratory goals to prioritize safety and care of patient, answer telephone calls, takes detailed notes as needed, responds to enquiries and provide only necessary information to the providers. Complies with all safety and HIPAA issues and maintains environment of care standards.
Perform tests, which require the exercise of independent judgment and responsibility, with a minimal supervision by the director or supervisor, in only those specialties, in which they are qualified by education, training and experience.
Follow laboratory quality control procedures, document quality control activities and instrument maintenance performed.
Maintain records that demonstrate that proficiency testing samples are tested in the same manner as patient specimens.
Follow the laboratory’s established policies and procedures whenever test systems are not within the laboratory’s established acceptable levels of performance. Knowledgeable about the contents of the policies and procedures (including changes) relevant to the scope of their testing activities.
Capable of identifying problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of test results and either must correct the problems or immediately notify the supervisor or director. Document all corrective actions taken when test systems deviate from the laboratories established performance specifications.
Communicate pending and other tasks to fellow workers and supervisors as required to avoid safety and patient care issues and accomplish tasks within due course of time for efficient laboratory operations.
Accession specimens and orders into the LIS, separate specimens for distribution to all laboratory departments and sends specimens to reference laboratory following laboratory guidelines of storage, aliquoting and batch processing in the computer in a timely manner.
Engage in QA PI programs, follow laboratory and hospital safety procedures, report/document critical results to appropriate medical staff, communicate, and document corrected results to the appropriate medical staff.
Perform maintenance and calibration (daily/weekly/monthly) on instrumentation or applicable platforms, monitors supplies, inventory and equipment for adequacy and functionality, troubleshoots problems and calls service or vendor technical support when needed. Monitor environmental monitors and document lot number and expiration dates of the testing materials used.
Document results accurately in the laboratory computer system.
In event of non-conformities, ensures that results of test examinations are not reported until all corrective have been taken and the test system is properly functioning. Brings problems and other pertinent issues to the attention of the supervisor in a timely manner.
Demonstrates reliable and professional conduct and interacts cooperatively with colleagues within the facility.
Performs other duties assigned and or in an emergency necessary for the welfare of patients or the efficient operation of the hospital.
Minimum Qualifications 1. Valid license as a clinical laboratory technologist, cytotechnologist, or histotechnologist issued by the NYSED. In addition to meeting the qualification requirement of Assignment Level II, appointment to Level III requires:
1. One (1) year of full-time paid experience as a technologist in a clinical laboratory or blood bank.
Special Notes:
Qualifying experience is not limited to New York State.
Candidates that are solely licensed or issued permits to practice as cytotechnologists or histotechnologists may only be assigned work, including supervising personnel performing laboratory work, in a laboratory discipline/specialty appropriate to their license or permit. Candidates that are licensed or hold permits to practice as clinical laboratory technologists may be assigned work, including supervising personnel performing laboratory work, in all laboratory disciplines/specialties.
