Travel An Electrophysiology (EP) Technologistworks in a specialized clinical setting, assisting in the diagnosisand treatment of heart rhythm disorders (arrhythmias) throughelectrophysiology procedures. EP Techs play a crucial role insupporting electrophysiologists (cardiologists specializing in theheart’s electrical system) during diagnostic tests such aselectrophysiology studies (EPS) and catheter ablations. They areresponsible for preparing patients, operating specializedequipment, and assisting in procedures to treat abnormal heartrhythms, ensuring patient safety and comfort. /n/n
KeyResponsibilities:
/n /n 1. /n
Pre-Procedure Preparation:
/n /n
- Prepare the electrophysiology (EP) lab for procedures, ensuring allnecessary equipment (e.g., catheters, electrophysiology mappingsystems, defibrillators, and recording devices) is sterile,functioning, and ready. /n
- Verify patient information, reviewmedical history, and ensure that all necessary documentation,consents, and pre-procedure requirements are completed. /n
- Assistpatients in preparing for procedures, including explaining theprocess, positioning them correctly, and ensuring they arecomfortable. /n
- Review the procedure plan with theelectrophysiology team and assist in setting up the necessaryequipment to meet the specific needs of each patient.

Assisting During Electrophysiology Procedures:
/n /n
- Assistthe electrophysiologist during diagnostic and interventionalprocedures such as electrophysiology studies (EPS), catheterablations, pacemaker and implantable cardioverter-defibrillator(ICD) insertions, and cardiac mapping. /n
- Handle and operatespecialized equipment, such as 3D mapping systems,electrophysiology catheters, electrical stimulator devices, andcardiac imaging systems, to assist in precise diagnosis andtreatment. /n
- Monitor the patient’s vital signs (e.g., heartrate, blood pressure, oxygen saturation) during procedures andreport any changes or abnormalities to the physician. /n
- Assistin performing intracardiac recordings, stimulation studies, andmapping of electrical pathways to identify arrhythmias anddetermine appropriate treatment. /n
- Prepare and administermedications, such as antiarrhythmic drugs or sedatives, as directedby the physician.

Post-Procedure Care andMonitoring:
/n /n
- Monitor patients post-procedure for anycomplications, including arrhythmias, bleeding at the insertionsite, or adverse reactions to medications. /n
- Providepost-procedure instructions to patients and their families,including care of the catheter insertion site, activityrestrictions, and signs to watch for indicating complications. /n
- Assist in the transfer of patients to recovery or the appropriateunit, ensuring patient safety and comfort during transport.

Equipment Maintenance and Troubleshooting:

- Ensurethe proper calibration, operation, and maintenance ofelectrophysiology equipment, including mapping systems, ablationcatheters, and recording devices. /n
- Perform routine checks toensure that all equipment is functional before each procedure andtroubleshoot any issues that may arise during the procedure. /n
- Clean and sterilize equipment according to infection controlstandards to ensure readiness for future procedures.

Medical Team:

- Work closely withelectrophysiologists, nurses, and other healthcare professionals inthe EP lab to ensure smooth and efficient patient care duringprocedures. /n
- Communicate effectively with the team to providefeedback on patient progress, equipment status, and any issues orconcerns that arise during procedures. /n
- Participate in casediscussions or meetings to help plan for complex cases or reviewpatient outcomes.

Patient Education and Support:

- Educate patients on the electrophysiology procedure, includingwhat to expect before, during, and after the procedure, and answerany questions to reduce anxiety. /n
- Provide emotional support topatients and their families throughout the diagnostic and treatmentprocess, ensuring they feel informed and reassured.

Documentation and Record-Keeping:
/n /n
- Accurately document allaspects of the procedure, including patient information, equipmentused, and any changes in the patient’s condition. /n
- Ensure thatall records are completed accurately in the electronic healthrecord (EHR) and follow hospital policies and regulatoryguidelines.

Safety and InfectionControl Protocols:
/n /n
- Adhere to hospital safety and infectioncontrol standards, including sterile technique, radiation safetyprotocols, and HIPAA regulations. /n
- Follow the guidelines forproper patient positioning, catheter insertion, and safe handlingof equipment during procedures. /n
- Ensure that the EP lab ismaintained in a clean and organized manner, reducing the risk ofinfection and promoting a safe working environment.

Professional Development and Training:

- Stay up to date withthe latest advancements in electrophysiology procedures,technologies, and best practices. /n
- Participate in continuingeducation programs and certification to enhance skills andknowledge in electrophysiology and cardiology. /n
- Assist intraining new staff or students, sharing knowledge and experienceabout electrophysiology procedures and equipment.
