Are you looking for an exciting opportunity to gain hands-on experience in a fast-paced, highly collaborative healthcare environment? UPMC Hamot in Erie, PA is seeking a Casual Specimen Processor to join our dedicated laboratory team. This position offers variable shifts with a minimum commitment of 12 hours per pay period and two weekend shifts per month . Holiday availability is required as needed , offering flexibility while providing valuable experience in a critical part of patient care. As a Specimen Processor, you’ll be the first step in the diagnostic testing process —receiving, sorting, identifying, and distributing specimens with accuracy and consistency. You’ll also input requisition information, assist with reporting results, answer phones, train new employees, and provide clerical support. This role is ideal for candidates with healthcare experience, medical terminology knowledge , or a science education background . A stable work history and a keen eye for detail are highly valued. Responsibilities:
Demonstrate a service-oriented approach by conveying courtesy, respect, enthusiasm, and a positive attitude in all work situations; show initiative and assist in completing departmental tasks. Monitor pneumatic tube and courier deliveries to ensure timely specimen processing; receive, sort, and prioritize all specimens according to laboratory policies. Investigate and resolve specimen problems or requesting errors; complete quality forms for unacceptable specimens or issues and request assistance when needed. Verify patient specimens, including blood, urine, and body fluids, against requisitions or labels to ensure accuracy; properly request tests in the Laboratory Information System when needed. Separate specimens by centrifugation, label aliquot tubes, transfer according to policy, and store samples at the appropriate temperature. Prepare, package, and send specimens to outside facilities as required; share specimens with appropriate departments as necessary. Determine and enter specimen receive times into the computer system; perform related data entry and clerical duties as directed. Answer telephone inquiries regarding specimen collection, test results, and normal range information. Follow all health and safety regulations related to the handling of biohazardous specimens and sharps to prevent exposure. Notify the supervisor of problems or any requests needing clarification or credit. Disinfect the work area during and after the shift to maintain cleanliness and safety. Participate in the orientation and training of new specimen processors.
Required:
High School diploma or equivalent. Good oral and written communication skills. Ability to communicate effectively with all age groups and populations of external and internal customers (as well as co-workers) both by telephone and in person.
Preferred:
Three to six months of experience in a clinical laboratory, physician’s office, or other medical environment, including knowledge of or experience in Medical Terminology and Laboratory Information systems. Three to six months of experience in a service environment including call center, customer service center, or product distribution/fulfillment center.
