SPCA of NENC Manager SPCA of Northeastern North Carolina 102 Enterprise Drive, Elizabeth City, NC 27909 Mission of SPCA of NENC The mission of the SPCA of NENC is to rescue and rehabilitate homeless, sick and neglected animals, providing them with love and a safe haven. The SPCA of NENC strives for a no-kill environment by maximizing adoptions and promoting responsible pet ownership within our community.
Primary Purpose of Position :
The shelter Manager provides day-to-day oversight of all aspects of the shelter facility, staff, volunteers and the animal population together with a variety of executive level administrative duties. The Shelter Manager is responsible for maintaining a safe, healthy environment for animals, staff, and the public, while offering a high level of service in promoting, developing and implementing operational objectives including responsible animal care and effective outreach services to the community. The Shelter Manager is responsible for complying with all local, state, and federal laws related to animal shelters and maintaining records and reports related to animal services programs and activities. Employees must exercise initiative, independent judgement, and make wise, ethical decisions in all phases of work. Employee must offer excellent customer service and supervisory skills. Reports to SPCA Board President.
Work Schedule :
The SPCA of NENC is staffed 7 days a week, 8:00 am – 5:00 pm and is open to the public 5 days a week. This position will work a varied schedule but is expected to work 5 days a week. The Shelter Manager will be expected to work rotating weekends and holidays. The Shelter Manager may be required to work evenings/nights and may be called in after hours in cases of emergency. The shelter Manager may be expected to work during extreme weather conditions (snow, hurricanes). Responsibilities Lead team to oversee, coordinate and conduct of daily care such as feeding, cleaning, walking, medicating, and vaccinating animals as well as outcomes such as adoption and foster placement. When needed, assist with the execution of these tasks. Provide support, training, and performance feedback; participate in performance conversations; support hiring and onboarding. Oversee and ensure training of all staff in all areas of operations to develop, evolve and implement efficient processes; participate in the development of operating procedures; follow policies, procedures, and task lists, including accurate and timely communications, work completion, data entry, and recordkeeping. Coordinate daily with Pasquotank and Camden Counties’ Animal Control departments on intakes, holds, injuries, and emergency euthanasia. Monitors inventory and orders supplies including controlled substances Inspect shelter to ensure work is accomplished, shelter is clean and orderly, and animals are in good health and well-being.
Requirements Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities :
- Comprehensive knowledge of shelter policies and procedures
- Comprehensive knowledge of the laws, ordinances, and regulations governing animal shelter operations and the care of animals
- Comprehensive knowledge of care, control and handling of small and large domesticated animals
- Comprehensive knowledge in preparing detailed reports and other forms of correspondence
- General knowledge in the use of standard office equipment and associated software
- General knowledge of and ability to recognize common animal disease
- Ability to work with, leash, kennel, walk, and handle cats and dogs, including those with health and/or behavior conditions/concerns; basic ability to identify and speak to medical and behavioral characteristics of dogs and cats.

- Ability to plan and supervise the work of assigned staff
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, board members, animal control officers and staff, and the public

- Strong interpersonal skills, a team player, personable, professional, and able to get along with people from different backgrounds, as well as the ability to handle sensitive and confidential situations.
Minimum Training & Experience :
:
- High School Diploma or GED or 1-2 years’ experience in customer service, animal related programs or similar.
- Experience in leading teams or managing people
- Equivalent combination of education and experience
- Associates degree in veterinary science
- Licensed Veterinary Technician
- 3+ years of supervisory experience.
- Obtain and/or maintain CET and vaccinator certification within 6 months of hire
- Valid driver’s license
