Job Description

Assist with the administration of medications under the supervision of a licensed nurse

PURPOSE STATEMENT

Assist with the administration of medications under the supervision of a licensed nurse.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Ensure the well-being of patients and provide a positive, supportive, and structured environment, under the direction of charge nurse or supervisor.
  • Administer prescribed medications to patients according to established protocols and physician orders.
  • Prepare and organize medication doses, including oral, topical, and other forms as directed.
  • Ensure medications are stored and handled in accordance with safety guidelines and regulatory requirements.
  • Document patient interactions and report changes in patient conditions or behaviors by communicating with team. Significant changes are reported to nurse immediately.
  • Document timely, accurate, and appropriate information in patient medical record.
  • Identify self to patient and visitors promptly and respond to patient requests quickly.
  • Respond to distressed patients in a non-threatening manner and attempt to understand the source of distress.
  • Apply de-escalation techniques to help manage patient’s emotions, behavior, and participation in treatment.
  • Communicate clearly and effectively to patients, family members, guests, and other members of the health care team.
  • Adherence to work schedule and overall attendance.
  • Follow established policies, procedures, and standards for patient care.
  • Stay informed about changes in medication practices and healthcare regulations.
  • Participate in ongoing training and professional development as required.
  • Collaborate with other staff in working with the population of the facility to treat and rehabilitate.
  • Demonstrate a positive, empathetic, and professional attitude towards customers always.

When patient needs are not met, acknowledge and work to resolve complaints. Recognize that patient safety is a top priority.

OTHER FUNCTIONS
  • Perform other functions and tasks as assigned.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/SKILL REQUIREMENTS
  • High School diploma or equivalent required.
  • Completion of a Medication Technician/Aide training program as required by the state in which the facility is located.
  • Basic understanding of pharmacology and medication administration techniques.
  • Previous experience in a behavioral health setting preferred.
  • Knowledge and experience working with the population of the facility preferred.
LICENSES/DESIGNATIONS/CERTIFICATIONS
  • Certification as a Medication Technician/Aide, as required by the state in which the facility is located.
  • CPR and de-escalation/restraint certification required (training available upon hire and offered by facility).
  • First aid may be required based on state or facility.
