Job Summary:
- Nurse Manager Emergency Departmentassumes 24-hour responsibility for overall assessment, planning,implementation and evaluation of patient care.
- Nurse ManagerEmergency Department responsibilities include oversight anddirection for the emergency department, and accountability forplanning, directing, leading and evaluating nursing care within thedepartment.
- Foster an environment of collaboration and respectwith all other healthcare team members.
- Weekend and holidaycoverage as needed is also a responsibility of the role as NurseManager.
- Performs related duties as required.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES ANDRESPONSIBILITIES
Operational Performance
- Develops long-term unitstaffing schedules and ensures adequate daily coverage inaccordance with established staffing needs.
- Develops measures andmonitors unit operational performance metrics inclusive, agency andovertime costs, vacancy and turnover rates.
- Oversees the dailyworkflow, staffing, orientation, training and development ofemployees within the department.
- Responsible for the ongoingquality/performance improvement processes related to the emergencydepartment.
- Promote and support a collaborative team approach inproviding care for all ED and trauma patients.
- Approach others ina tactful manner and treat others with respect and consideration
- Support and interpret policies, procedures, and objectives of thehospital.
- Monitors customer satisfaction scores and implementsplans to improve scores.
- Monitors patient volume, quality of care,and performance of staff to identify areas for improvement
- Maintains a departmental dashboard that includes information andprogress on people, service, quality, and leadership
- Responsiblefor investigating patient, physician and staff complaints/concernsand works to resolve the aforementioned.
- Maintains requiredcompetencies for self and all employees within the department

- Collaborates with the CNO/SVP of nursing toestablish nursing care standards and evaluates staff compliance
- Identifies protocols affecting the patient population served andkeeps nursing staff informed.
- Demonstrates self-development andkeeps currents on a variety of clinical management and health caretopics.
- Maintains a safe and caring environment for patients,family and staff that is conducive to positive health teaching andmaintenance; and develops mechanism to assess same.
- Ensures equalaccess to treatment for all persons in need regardless of race,ethnicity, gender, disability, age, or sexual orientation.
Management
- Participates in the overall planning process for theservice.
- Conducts monthly meetings with the staff to addressequipment, scheduling, goals, and objectives, performance metricsand improvement activities, and any staff concerns. Human ResourceDevelopment/Management
- Educates and evaluates staff.
- Works withnursing leadership/Human Resources to counsel, discipline andterminate staff as needed.
- Educates staff in new and existingdepartment procedures and systems (eg. Information systems, etc.
- Creates and maintains an atmosphere of respect and courtesy towardpatients, staff and colleagues.
Skills:
Required Skills &Experience:
- Minimum of five (5) years nursing experience ofmanagement and/or supervisory in the Emergency Department
- Demonstrates leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills
- Ability to effectively communicate in English both verbally and inwriting.
- Excellent creative skills, ideas to improve existingprograms.
- Ability to determine appropriate action in complexsituations.
- Ability to manage multiple and simultaneousresponsibilities and to prioritize scheduling work.
- Ability tocomplete work assignments accurately and in a timely manner
- Ability to handle difficult situations involving patients,physicians, or others in a professional manner.
