GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF POSITION A

phlebotomist works closely with the laboratory staff to obtain and process appropriate samples for testing. They are in charge of labeling and filing paperwork correctly. The phlebotomist has to follow safety protocol in collection of samples.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Maintains the quality of specimens by properly collecting samples, employing appropriate technique in processing samples. Recognizes inappropriate specimens and requests new specimens if determined to be unusable. Communicates effectively with patients and other office personnel regarding specimen collection and transport. Correct labeling of samples. Complete paperwork/ordering for specimens. Follow safety rules while working. Performs testing assigned by laboratory director (urinalysis, creatinine, NMP22,) Performing Quality Control on all analyzers or waived kit test as needed Processing of urine for cytology, cultures, etc. Maintain temperatures in area. Clean area. Take inventory and order supplies as needed. Stock the laboratory. Train new phlebotomists. Complete reports when there are hazardous incidents and consult with the laboratory manager for further direction. Testing requirements and collection instructions are effectively communicated to patients and other appropriate individuals. Neat, legible written records must be maintained. Perform clerical duties such as filing, aiding technologists and collecting data. Understand how to use computer and able to learn system (EMR and Orchard Web Station). Perform any other related duties as required or assigned. Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty mentioned satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

High school diploma or equivalent. Diploma in Phlebotomy. Medical Assistant with 2 yrs training in phlebotomy preferred. Phlebotomy certification is a plus. BLS required.
