Overview The Orthopaedic Technician (or “Cast Tech”) performs a variety of functions to support and care for patients with a limited degree of supervision in the ambulatory clinic, inpatient, and emergency room settings. Collaborates with specialty teams to provide outstanding patient service in an innovative and fast-paced Orthopaedic Practice. Responsibilities
1. Applies and adjusts fiberglass/plaster casts, braces, and/or splints and may assist with assembling and attaching orthopaedic traction equipment and devices.
2. Educates patients on care and usage of casts.
3. Acts as a resource for colleagues with less casting experience.
4. Trains others (e.g., Athletic Trainers, Nurses, and Interns) on proper casting techniques.
5. Provides assistance to the physician during minor procedures.
6. Assists provider in cleansing wounds, assists in reducing fractures and application of surgical dressing.
7. Fits thermoplastic splints and / or braces.
8. Inspects cast saws to ensure optimal performance.
9. Escorts patients to exam rooms and assists physicians with exams as needed. Assists nursing staff to maintain timely and orderly patient flow.
10. Maintains inventory and security of devices and supplies for the care of orthopaedic patients including cast materials, braces, splints, and other devices. Assures appropriate submission of charges for devices dispensed.
11. Participates in and/or facilitates site-wide committees, meetings, in-services, and activities.
12. Maintains a positive and enthusiastic attitude towards learning and teamwork.

  • Associate Degree in Science in Orthopaedic Technology required.
  • One (1) year of previous health care related experience preferred.
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills required.
  • Ability to read and understand medical terminology. Required Licensure/Certifications
  • BLS within 30 days
  • Certified Orthopedic Technician (OTC) OR Registered Orthopedic Technician (ROT)
  • NH Medical Technician OR Tmp Medical Technician
