General Summary The Assistant Department Director of Athletics & Action Sports leads the division in coordinating and managing numerous athletic venues, action sport facilities, programs, events, and partnerships such as Memorial and Olympia Stadiums, Central Sports Park, Oak Villa Complex, Perkins Extreme Sports, Sports Academy, Kathy Sports Park, disc golf courses, and others. The Assistant Director performs advanced professional work within the administrative office and is responsible for the administration, staffing, training, scheduling and security of facilities and parks under the direction of the Department Director Recreation. May assume responsibilities of the Department Director Recreation in their absence. Will interact with BREC staff and the public daily, in person and by telephone.
Requirements and Job Specifications Required Education:
Graduation from an accredited 4-year college or university. Area of Study (major)
Required:
Recreation Administration, Physical Education, Sports Management, Facility Management or closely related field
Preferred:
Master’s degree from an accredited college or university. Certification(s)
Required:
Certified Park and Recreation Professional (CPRP) through NRPA or certification in related field or specialty area.
Preferred:
Professional memberships with LRPA or
NRPA. CPRP
through or certification in related field or specialty area. License(s)
Required:
Valid LA driver’s license.
Years of Relevant Work Experience:
Minimum 5 years progressive experience in a related field with at least 2 years in a supervisory capacity. Equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.
Preferred:
Ten (10) or more years related experience, at least 3 years full-time at BREC.
Other Job Specifications:
Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices and all phases of recreation, facility management, and event planning is required.
Leadership and interpersonal skills with ability to develop and maintain effective working relations with departmental staff and to relate well to representatives of public and private interest groups and officials of other agencies.
Knowledge of the communities served by BREC, including community’s concerns and interests.
Computer skills are required, including Outlook, Microsoft Suites, RecTrac, and MainTrac, and Munis Systems (financial management) software.
Ability to analyze and articulate BREC policies, operations and programs.
Ability to supervise and direct employees, and develop a positive, productive working relationship is required.
Ability to plan and organize people and programs effectively.
Ability to analyze financial reports and budget management.
Ability to assess performance problems and identify appropriate training and development programs.
Ability to work flexible hours, including some nights and weekends Functions and Duties Leads managers and coordinators in directing day-to-day operations of all athletic and action sport venues and their respective programs.
Leads site managers in directing day-to-day operation of all special facilities and respective programs.
Serves as a liaison between BREC and Advisory Boards of organizations utilizing BREC Facilities.
Works directly with other BREC Departments affecting special facilities including but not limited to Park Operations, Planning & Construction, and Risk Management.
Ensures compliance with BREC policies and procedures.
