Job Summary:
- Neonatalintensive care RNs provide critical care to premature and sicknewborns.
- Utilize the nursing process in the provision of directpatient care.
- Responsible and accountable for prescribing,delegating, and coordinating all care provided to assignedpatients.
- Ensures a newborn’s critical care treatment is secure
- Delivery of care is based on the standards of care and practicesestablished by the Department of Nursing and other policies andprocedures (hospital, nursing, multidisciplinary).
- Diagnose andtreat human responses to actual and potential health problemsthrough such services as case finding, health teaching, healthcounseling, and provision of care supportive or to restorative oflife and well-being.
- Supervise patient care provided by licensedpractical nurses (LPNs), registered nurses on permit (RNP), nursingattendants, technicians, and supplemental staff.
- Assess theimmediate and continuing care needs of the patient and parent(s)
- Provides respiratory care support ensuring that ventilatorequipment is functioning properly and items such as tubing ispatent, tape and tubing are in place, oxygen saturation levelsremain at appropriate levels, ensures that blood gases show goodoxygen exchange, perform chest suction when needed, etc
- Feeds NICUpatients via bottle, naso-gastric (ng) tubes or IV.
- Sets up IVpumps and maintains feeding rates.
- Measure abdominal girth andcheck for stools for blood.
- Start IVs and draw blood as needed
- Assess IV and draw sites for skin breakdown and skin damage.
- Workwith physicians and upper-level nursing to develop and assist withtreatment and examination of patients.
- Develop comprehensive andcurrent plans of care which include physical needs, caregiverteaching, discharge planning, home care and psychosocial/spiritualneeds.
- Provide direct patient care based on assessed needs and themedical regimen.
- Oversees and ensures the provision of all aspectsof care for the patient.
- Supervises the care provided by othernursing personnel as defined in the scope of practice.
- Observe,evaluate, document, and communicate to relevant team members thepatient’s response to illness and/or therapeutic modalities
- Ensures timely reassessment of patient responses to treatment andwhen significant changes occur in patient condition and/ordiagnosis.
- Coordinate the overall plan of care to ensureimplementation of nursing interventions and consistency withmedical regimen.
- Establish priorities for care in collaborationwith the multidisciplinary team and initiates follow-up, asindicated, to ensure timely provision of patient care andtherapeutic modalities.
- Assure the plan of care integratesage-specific care needs (e.g. pediatrics, geriatrics) as defined inthe unit scope of care.
- Accept responsibility and accountabilityfor nursing interventions and outcomes based on professionalclinical judgments.
- Participate in QI activities related topatient care delivery and the development of nursing/hospitalstandards.
- Demonstrate ability to communicate effectively, managestressful situations appropriately and facilitate interpersonalrelationships with other disciplines. Other Responsibilities
- Assumes charge responsibilities as delegated by the Nurse/Managerdesignee.
- Ensures appropriate coverage of all patients byassisting and relieving co-workers.
- Maintains a safe, therapeuticenvironment for patients, parents, and staff.

Required Skills & Experience:
- 1 year inemergency or critical care setting.
- 1 year in pediatric setting.
