Full Job Description Position Summary:
The School Nurse is responsible for providing healthcare services to students at Northwood Academy Charter School. In addition to providing healthcare, the School Nurse will promote health education and preventive health practices to the students.
Essential Accountabilities:
- Ensure all students’ immunizations are up to date and documentation is compliant with PA state guidelines.
- Dispense students’ prescribed medications and maintain them in the designated secure location.
- Develop plans for student care based on assessment, intervention, and identification of outcomes and the evaluation of care such as 504 plans.
- Coordinate with the CSN and Doctor on medical issues that arise.
- Serve as consultants to other school professionals, i.e., food service personnel, physical education teachers, coaches, and counselors.
- Ensure all nurse office visits, injuries and parent provided health and dental assessments are documented accurately and kept up to date in the student information system for SHARRS and SILR reporting.
- Communicate with school administration and leadership on all relevant matters as directed.
- Distribute all daily medication according to doctors’ orders.
- Communicate with parents/guardians when a student visits the Nurse’s Office by phone, face-to-face and/or nurse office visit form and to obtain required medical documentation from family physicians and dentists.
- Provide and document annual hearing, vision, BMI and scoliosis screenings.
- Maintain monthly inventory of medical items within the Nurse’s Office.
- Secure and organize confidential medical documents.
- Assist with the coordination of the Mobile Dentist to provide service to the students and collect all necessary documentation.
- Prepare medical bags for all trips and attend when required.
- Handle minor health issues that occur daily for students and staff.
- Respond to all emergency issues within the school building and grounds.
- Working with Director of Operations and Human Resources investigate circumstances of on-the-job injuries or accidents and prepare required documentation and reports regarding any safety issues.
- Complete any pending year-end health reports or summaries.
- All relevant duties as assigned by school administration.
Education/Experience:
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing from an accredited university.
- Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license to practice professional nursing in the state of Pennsylvania.
- PA Certificate as a School Nurse.
- CPR/First Aid Healthcare Provider Certification.
- Minimum of 2 years’ professional nursing experience, preferably working in a school setting and/or community health.
Qualifications:
- Knowledge of health appraisal to identify student health defects.
- Strong organizational, communication and interpersonal skills.
- Comply with and implement school policies and procedures.
Working Conditions:
May be stressful, depending upon circumstances. Exposure to bacteria and communicable diseases.
Physical Requirements:
There are physical aspects of this position to successfully carry out essential job functions, such as ability to lift or carry supplies and equipment up to 30 pounds. Must be able to sit, stand, bend, stoop, reach, grab, pull, see, hear, and speak daily. Employees in this classification may be subject to work environments that have exposure to weather or interiors with extremes of heat and/or cold, wet and/or humid conditions, high noise levels, and various work-related hazards.
