Travel TheRegistered Nurse (RN) in Labor and Delivery (L&D) isresponsible for providing comprehensive care to women during labor,delivery, and the immediate postpartum period. The RN in thisspecialty is skilled in managing both routine and high-riskpregnancies, monitoring fetal and maternal well-being, andassisting with deliveries. The L&D nurse collaborates withobstetricians, midwives, anesthesiologists, and other healthcareprofessionals to provide safe, compassionate, and effective care toboth mothers and newborns.
Key Responsibilities:
Pre-Labor andAdmission Assessment:
Assess and monitor the health of pregnantwomen at various stages of labor, including gathering healthhistories, vital signs, and physical assessments. Performnon-stress tests (NSTs), monitor fetal heart tones, and evaluateuterine activity for signs of labor progression. Educate patientson labor and delivery processes, pain management options, and whatto expect during childbirth.
Labor Support and Monitoring:
Monitorthe progress of labor through regular assessment of contractionpatterns, cervical dilation, fetal heart rate, and maternal vitalsigns. Administer medications, including epidurals, Pitocin, andpain relief options, as prescribed, and monitor their effects.
Provide continuous emotional support and pain management throughoutthe labor process, using comfort measures, including positioning,breathing techniques, and offering encouragement. Assist withamniotomy, if necessary, and other procedures as directed by thehealthcare team. Assisting with
Delivery:
Assist obstetricians ormidwives during vaginal deliveries, including providinginstrumentation assistance, suctioning, and other necessary actionsduring the birth. Participate in cesarean section procedures byensuring the sterile field, assisting with the delivery process,and providing immediate newborn care after birth. Perform neonatalresuscitation and initial assessment of the newborn’s healthimmediately after delivery.
Postpartum Care:
Monitor the health andrecovery of both the mother and the newborn in the immediatepostpartum period, including assessing vital signs, bleeding, anduterine tone. Assist with breastfeeding support, including teachingproper latch techniques, positioning, and addressing any concernsrelated to infant care. Provide education on postpartum recovery,self-care, and newborn care, such as diapering, bathing, andrecognizing signs of illness.
Documentation and Reporting:
Documentall assessments, interventions, medications, and patient progressaccurately in the electronic health record (EHR) to maintaincompliance with hospital policies and legal standards. Maintainaccurate and timely records of labor and delivery processes,including patient and fetal monitoring results.
Collaboration andCommunication:
Work closely with obstetricians, anesthesiologists,neonatologists, and other healthcare team members to plan andimplement individualized care for each patient. Communicate clearlywith patients and families about the progress of labor, potentialcomplications, and available options, ensuring that informedconsent is obtained for procedures when necessary.
InfectionControl and Safety:
Follow infection control procedures to maintaina safe and sterile environment for labor, delivery, and postpartumcare. Ensure that all equipment used during labor and delivery isproperly sterilized and functioning, including fetal monitoringdevices, IV pumps, and delivery instruments.
Emergency andHigh-Risk Situations:
Recognize signs of complications, such asfetal distress, preeclampsia, and hemorrhage, and initiateappropriate interventions or escalate care as needed. Respond toobstetric emergencies, such as shoulder dystocia, uterine rupture,and neonatal resuscitation, utilizing appropriate protocols andteamwork. Administer medications and interventions for high-riskpregnancies, including managing complications like hypertension,gestational diabetes, or infections.
Patient Education andAdvocacy:
Provide education and support to patients and familiesregarding labor, delivery options, newborn care, and postpartumrecovery.
