Job Profile Summary ? This role focuses on providing medical andclinical support services to patients . In addition, this rolefocuses on performing the following Surgical Services duties:

Responsible for medical services involving the excision or incisionof a patient’s body, such as interventional pain management andother procedures. This position also works to provide a safeenvironment for patients undergoing invasive procedures or surgery.

A clinical technologist role that has specialized knowledge orskills gained through a combination of vocational education,training, and experience. This role will be most commonly appliedto patient care and/or scientific/laboratory jobs. A senior levelrole requiring broad knowledge of operational procedures and toolsobtained through extensive work experience and requiring vocationalor technical education . Works under limited supervision forroutine situations, problems typically are not routine and requireanalysis to understand, provides assistance and/or may lead andtrain entry level employees and may lead daily operationactivities. Job Overview This position is an expert SurgicalTechnician who practices under the supervision of the surgical teamin the Operating Room to deliver patient care throughout theperioperative experience. A ssists the Surgeon during surgery byproviding the appropriate instruments and in maintaining andorganizing operating room equipment. P erforms according to thepolicies, procedures, philosophy, and objectives of the departmentand hospital . A ssist s in coordinating the services, techniquesand teachings of those individuals assigned to specialty servicesin which technician has an expertise and is daily assigned. Workscooperatively within department and other services to create asystem of quality health care.

Job Description MinimumQualifications :

1. High school diploma or equivalent. 2. BeforeJuly 1, 2013, employed as a surgical technologist in a surgicalfacility; OR Successfully completed a training program for surgicaltechnology in the military; OR Graduated from an accreditedSurgical Tech Program. 3. If employed as a Surgical Technologistafter July 1, 2013, Surgical Technologist Certification (CST) isrequired. 4. 3 Years to Less than 8 Years of healthcare experience.5. Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification.

Duties andResponsibilities :

The duties and responsibilities listed below areintended to describe the general nature of work and are notintended to be an all-inclusive list . Other duties andresponsibilities may be assigned. 1. Functions professionally andindependently as the Surgical Technologist Operating Room on a widevariety and in all stages of surgical procedures. 2. Maintainsstrict aseptic technique during set-up, patient draping and duringsurgical procedure. 3. Scrubs on surgical cases, participates insurgery by organizing the instrumentation to the surgeon,participating in surgical counts. 4. Selects and prepares theappropriate instruments , supplies and equipment for surgical cases. 5. Performs related activities under the direction of the surgeon. 6. Performs all counts with the circulating nurse according toOperating Room policy. 7. Manages all intraoperative medications inaccordance with Operating Room policy. 8. Manages surgicalspecimens according to Physician’s orders and Hospital policy. 9.Follows Operating Room procedures for the proper decontamination ofinstrumentation, equipment, and room turnover. 10. Assists in thepositioning, moving and transporting of patients as needed. 11.Reports equipment and supply problems to the Charge Nurse, ServiceLead or Clinical Nursing Director as needed . 12. When notparticipating on surgical cases, assists with positioning obtainingneeded items during surgery and assists in room turnover activities. 13. Participates in Operating Room activities related to qualityimprovement, continuing education, orientation of new personnel andemergency preparedness. 14. Remains knowledgeable about servicespecific equipment ensuring safe and efficient utilization . 15.Maintains a collaborative work relationship with peers andcolleagues in order to create a positive work environment. 16.Performs the role of Preceptor for staff in training. 17. Assistsin orientation of new personnel ( i.e. aides, orderlies,technicians, nurses, etc.) to the protocols, policies, rules andregulations of the Operating Suite. 18. Displays leadershipqualities and acts as a role model and mentor. 19. Remainsknowledgeable about equipment ensuring safe and efficientutilization across multiple surgical specialties.

PhysicalRequirements :

1. Ability to work within the semi-restricted andrestricted environment of the Operating Room and otherPerioperative support areas. 2. Stands under hot surgical lightsfor prolonged periods of time. 3. Possibility of muscle strain fromlifting patients and heavy equipment, shocks and burns from cauteryunits and autoclaves. Possibility of cuts from sharp instruments.4. Frequent exposure to hazardous chemicals, blood and bodilyfluids, extreme noise levels, radiation, lasers, drasticfluctuations in ambient temperature, etc. 5. Ability to wear aprotective lead apron for extended periods of time and exposure toradioactivity, harmful anesthesia gases and septic infections. 6.Requires frequent lifting and positioning of patients, materials,equipment, power tools, instruments, etc. 7. Frequent contacts withpatients, physicians and nursing staff in Operating Room .

Skills &Abilities:

1. Expert knowledge of aseptic technique and infectionprevention practices. 2. Advanced knowledge of anatomy andphysiology, medical terminology, microbiology , and pharmacology toensure that optimal patient care is provided. 3. Intermediateknowledge of computers, surgical equipment , and infrastructure. 4.Intermediate knowledge and skills necessary to provide care topatients throughout the life span. 5. Excellent interpersonalskills to effectively interact with staff, patients, physicians,vendors , and other departments within the hospital. 6.Demonstrates superior knowledge and expert clinical practice whileassisting with advanced procedure types within their surgicalspecialty area. 7. Demonstrates expert knowledge of the advancedinstrumentation and surgical equipment utilized within theirspecialty area. 8. Displays excellent knowledge and skills relatedto procedures performed outside of their surgical specialty areaand demonstrates the ability to proficiently support multipleservice lines and case types within the Operating Room.
