Job Title:
Surgical Technologist Job Summary:

To provide safe and effective care for patients by adhering to established standards and practices, consistent with professional and hospital guidelines.

Contacts:

Frequent and ongoing interaction with internal and external customers, including (but not limited to) patients, families, physicians, staff, and visitors. Key Responsibilities 1.

Coordination of Patient Care:

Assists the Registered Nurse in planning and delivering patient care. Collaborates effectively with other members of the healthcare team. Participates in performance improvement initiatives. Serves in a supportive role during surgical procedures, without acting as the surgical assistant. 2.

Implementation of Patient Care:

Maintains aseptic techniques. Performs scrubbing duties during surgical procedures. Communicates pertinent patient information to appropriate personnel. Ensures accountability for all equipment and supplies used in patient care. 3.

Interpersonal Skills:

Effectively communicates with colleagues, patients, visitors, and the interdisciplinary healthcare team. Demonstrates adaptability in a dynamic clinical environment. Promotes and supports teamwork within the department. Actively resolves problems and consistently meets departmental customer service and quality standards. 4.

Clinical Preceptorship:

Acts as a clinical preceptor for scrubbing, following the orientation outline in collaboration with the Patient Care Coordinator and Educator/Clinical Nurse Specialist. 5.

Environment and Equipment Care:

Ensures the cleanliness of the unit and proper maintenance of equipment. Assumes responsibility for the care and appropriate use of surgical equipment during procedures. Performs additional duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Skills and Competencies Knowledge & Skills:

Understanding of organizational policies and procedures related to patient care and safety. Familiarity with common safety hazards and preventive measures. Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships. Strong verbal communication and interpersonal skills. Proficiency in managing multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.

Additional Requirements:

This role involves limited access to medication rooms; handling of medications is not permitted. All related inquiries must be directed to a supervisor or the unit charge nurse. Physical & Environmental Demands Frequent standing, walking, bending, crouching, stooping. Regular lifting and moving of patients and equipment up to 50 lbs. Frequent pushing/pulling and use of hand/finger dexterity. Constant reaching and twisting movements. Continuous verbal communication and auditory engagement. Exposure to blood, body fluids, tissues, and potential infectious materials. May require call duty, holiday, or weekend work based on departmental needs. Moderate to high noise levels and high-stress environments are common.

Education & Certification Requirements Required:

BLS Certification (American Heart Association)

Highly Desired:

Minimum 1+ year of clinical operating room experience

NBSTSA Required:

High School Diploma or GED Must meet one of the following qualifications to practice as a

Surgical Technologist:

(a) Graduate of an accredited surgical technology program and certified by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA). Graduates may practice for up to 3 months prior to certification. (b) Completed a surgical technology training program through the U.S. Armed Forces or U.S. Public Health Service. (c) Employed in a surgical technologist role in this state prior to January 1, 2008. (d) Federal government service personnel performing related duties.
