Description The City of Jefferson is currently accepting applications for an Assistant Leader for Camp Frost and Substitutes for our Parks and Recreation Department. The subsitute position will as needed work for the following day camps: Aqua Camp Adventure, Binder Adventure Camp, Camp Out & About, Camp Wokka Wokka, Camp Greenberry, Camp Frost and Camp Oakley. Creativity All camp positions work daytime hours Monday-Friday and hours are approximately 7:15 am to 5:45 pm. Average hours worked 45-55 per week.

Examples of Duties Counselor:

Under the direct supervision of the Day Camp Leader, the Counselor is responsible for the following duties: Directs appropriate daily activities for campers as assigned; Structures activities within the overall camp activity plan to suit the needs and interests of the assigned group; Assists in the implementation of previously planned activities and programs; Attends all staff meetings and contribute to camp planning with suggestions for program content; Enforces and adhere to all rules and regulations of the camp; Responsible for the safety, welfare, education and recreational needs of the campers including a thorough familiarity of the Department’s Emergency and Crisis Plan; Projects a positive image to the public by representing the Parks and Recreation Department in a professional manner and assist in the promotion of their programs and facilities; May be required to supervise campers while in transit on chartered bus to and from camp; Maintains a practice of stewardship for park property and camp supplies including proper accounting and storage of all camp equipment.

Assistant Leader:

In addition to the above job functions, this position works under the Day Camp Leader and is responsible for the following duties: Fills in as Camp Leader if the assigned leader is absent.

Leader:

In addition to the above job functions, this position works under the Day Camp Assistant Manager and is responsible for the following duties: Plans, organizes and supervises the operation of all camp and camp related activities. Trains, directs, supervises and evaluates counselors and volunteers, including planning orientation and in-service training. Writes camp reports and periodic evaluations of staff and the program based on observations, discussions by supervisors, campers and staff, and conferences. This includes keeping up-to-date records of attendance, inventory, employee hours, and other administrative matters as outlined by the Recreation Supervisor. Assists in administering the budget and business operations where necessary, including materials and supplies purchasing, equipment recommendations and other fiscal matters. Develops and carries out effective relationships with campers, parents and staff by creating an atmosphere in which all involved understand and are committed to the goals and objectives of the program. Handles all grievances and/or discipline cases involving campers and staff and report them to the Supervisor immediately. Develops and maintains a practice of stewardship for park property and camp supplies including proper accounting and storage of all camp equipment. Typical Qualifications Must have a valid driver’s license. A desire to work with children is essential.

Counselor:

Must to be at least 18 years of age and have completed at least one or more years of college with a background in education, recreation, art, sports, outdoor education or related field; CPR and first aid certification preferred; experience working with children. Experience in a program involving leadership in outdoor recreational activities, sports, education or special education similar to those found in an organized playground or camp program is preferred. Must be able to obtain and maintain CPR and First Aid Certification prior to the beginning of the day camp programs. Training is provided by JC Parks.

Assistant Leader:

In addition to the Counselor’s qualifications, this positions requires at least two or more years of college background in education, recreation, or related field; CPR and first aid certification required; experience working with children. Must have at least one year experience as a Camp Counselor.

Leader:

In addition to the Assistant Leaders qualifications this position requires applicants to be at least 18 years of age, 21 years of age is preferred; a degree or college major in recreation preferred; administration or supervisory experience in an organized camp is required. Certification in the American Campcrafters Association or similar camping organization with a thorough understanding of outdoor recreation, education, therapeutic recreation / special education and conservation or nature study is preferred. Current Red Cross CPR and First Aid certification is required. Supplemental Information The specific job title and salary depend on qualifications. The starting salary for a new hire Counselor is $14.10 per hour. Assistant Leader is $14.55 per hour and a Leader is $15.10 per hour.

Description of Day Camps:

Aqua Camp Adventure is geared for children in grades 2-7. This camp will be packed full of water activities such as water safety, slide races, water relays, water polo, diving competitions, and more! Camp activities out of the water will take place as well. Be sure to pack your sunscreen and be ready for a water-filled week of fun. Binder Adventure Camp is geared for children in grades 3-8. Some of the activities include canoeing, fishing, archery, confidence course, hiking, nature study and much more, held at Binder Park. Camp Out & About is geared for children entering grades 1-6. Activities will include but are not limited to basketball, flag football, soccer, golf, dodge ball, field trips, crafts, and nutrition information, held at Ellis Porter Park. Camp Wokka Wokka is geared for children entering grades K-2. Activities include arts and crafts, games and physical activities, cookouts, hikes, nature study, field trips and much more, held at McClung Park. Camp Greenberry is geared for children in grades 1-4. Activities focus on nature themes, conservation, environmental education as well as camp games and crafts and more. Camp will be held at Greenberry Park. Camp Frost is geared towards children entering grades 1-3. This day camp will have a variety of activities to keep kids moving and having fun on and off the ice! Camp includes after camp skate every afternoon. This camp goes outside and participates in regular camp activities that are not in the ice arena. Camp Oakley is for children grades 1-5. This camp includes a variety of recreational games, exploring the riverbank (no swimming), nerf wars and much more.
