OF THE RECREATION PROGRAM

To provide social and recreational services and supports for individuals with intellectual disability to enable them to live quality lives within their community.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The Recreation Assistant (RA) is the individual responsible for providing and ensuring that “hands on” direct services of the highest quality attainable are provided to the consumers. It is essential that the RA believe in the philosophy of the Agency and is able to implement programs that are viable and essential to the clients’ needs.

CRITICAL ELEMENTS

1) Ensure the

Safety of Staff and Consumers:

The RA has regular direct contact with other staff and consumers assigned to that program. The RA must be observant for safety issues and concerns; respond promptly to all reports regarding safety issues and concerns; correct what can be corrected and report what cannot be corrected by them to the Recreation Program Supervisor; monitor the site to ensure that the program is operating in a safe manner; and attend trainings to maximize safety. Examples of duties in this area: a) Closely supervise consumers in the community who do not have traffic safety skills. b) Ensure that universal precautions are followed. c) Report to the Recreation Program Supervisor all allegations of abuse of any kind. d) Assess the consumers’ safety needs and provide services and supports that will maximize their safety. e) Ensure that seat belts are worn in vehicles. f) Report electrical problems. g) Work scheduled hours. h) Have good attendance. 2) Ensure the Consumer’s Needs are

Met:

The RA must ensure that all services provided are individualized based on the needs of each consumer. Consumer needs vary, so services and supports provided are dependent on the individual’s needs. The RA will identify needs and will determine what type of assistance is necessary to support the consumers to gain new friends, to broaden social skills, to enhance creativity and to build confidence and self-esteem. The RA will attend training that will provide them with the knowledge to be able to meet the consumers’ needs. Examples of duties in this area: a) Develop services based on the consumers’ interests and desires (i.e. consumer choice.) b) Develop activity schedules that will increase the consumers’ skills and independence and which will minimize regression of skills in older consumers. c) Teach skills to consumers. d) Assist consumers in locating restrooms. e) Transfer consumers when needed. f) Provide encouragement and support for consumers to become involved members of the community. g) Carry out the directives of the Recreation Program Supervisor. h) Inform the Recreation Program Supervisor of information regarding program operations and personnel issues. i) Assist the consumers with ordering from menus. j) Locate transportation for consumers. k) Provide recreational activities based on consumer interests. l) Adjust work schedules to meet the changing needs of the consumers. 3)

Communicates With Others:

The RA must represent Bell in a professional manner. They must act as the link in the communication chain between consumers and the Recreation Program Supervisor on significant program issues. Information must be communicated in a timely, accurate and professional manner for the services to operate smoothly. Additionally, the RA must process written and verbal communication for various internal departments in a timely and accurate fashion as determined by the department. Examples of duties in this area: a) Interact positively and professionally with consumers and staff. b) Interact respectfully with parents. c) Ensure that incidents are reported to the point person in a timely fashion and in accordance with state regulations. d) Attend training and process information needed to successfully carry out their duties. e) Be aware of Agency information, policies and procedures. f) Inform the Recreation Program Supervisor of information regarding program operations and personnel issues. g) Carry out the directives of the Recreation Program Supervisor. h) Comply with schedules of events and provide attendance figures. i) Ensure that time sheets, billing and other paperwork are submitted correctly and in a timely fashion. j) Complete all required paperwork accurately and timely. k) Request permission from the Recreation Program Supervisor to make changes in the weekly schedule. l) Give at least two (2) hours’ notice in the event of an illness. m) Keep parents, families and consumers informed. 4) Ensure the Program is in Compliance with

All Regulations:

The RA must be knowledgeable and informed on all applicable regulations. They must monitor the site with regards to compliance with these regulations.

Regulatory agencies include:

Department of Public Welfare (DPW), Department of Health, OSHA, and Labor and Industry. In addition, the RA will operate the program with regards to Equal Opportunity guidelines and Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) directives. Examples of duties in this area are: a) Attend all required trainings. b) Monitor the program site for compliance with all applicable regulations. c) Correct and/or report all areas of non-compliance to the Recreation Program Supervisor 5) Ensure Programs Offer Services in a Manner Consistent with

Bell’s Philosophies:

The RA must be familiar with Bell’s and the Intellectual Disability Department’s Policy and Procedures Manual as well as with the philosophical beliefs. They will ensure that services provided are consistent with policies, procedures and philosophies of the Agency. In the Intellectual Disability Department, philosophies utilized include consumer directed services, person-centered planning, positive approaches, normalization/SRV, everyday lives philosophy and behavioral psychology. Examples of duties in this area: a) Maintain Bell’s Policy and Procedures Manual . b) Attend training to develop skills and knowledge. c) Encourage consumers to be as independent as possible in their social recreational activities. d) Ensure that events occur as scheduled. e) Encourage involvement of consumers’ families. f) Support consumers’ choices. 6) Be Innovative and Creative in

Improving Services:

The RA will strive to improve existing recreational services. They should strive to not only improve the services of the program, but to improve the Agency as a whole through feedback and input from staff, consumers, significant others and their own creativity.

ADDITIONAL ELEMENTS

1) Complete time sheets accurately and in a timely manner. 2) Support other programs in the Intellectual Disability Department. 3) Follow and support Agency philosophies, policies and procedures. 4) Accept changes in schedule to meet the consumers’ needs. 5) Show initiative by seeking tasks. 6) Provide a variety of experiences for the consumers based on their interests and preferences. 7) Support the consumers in exercising their rights. 8) Attend trainings as assigned. 9) Provide close supervision of assigned consumers. 10) Develop positive relations with neighbors and the community. 11) Network with Bell support staff. 12) Complete assigned tasks on time. 13) Other duties as assigned by the Residential Program Supervisor.
