All school counselors must have a Masters Degree in counseling and be certified by the New Hampshire Department of Education. The duties and responsibilities vary slightly at each level. However, these required skills for school counselors are the same at all levels: Demonstrate knowledge of counseling theory and technique, child and adolescent development, and state and federal regulations Demonstrate knowledge of the American School Counseling Association National Model Collaborate with other district school counselors to develop, review, and maintain the Comprehensive School Counseling Program Solid communication skills, ability to meet deadlines, and willingness to participate in a professional community Ability to create an environment of respect and rapport, manage routines and procedures, and contribute to the culture of student behavior Ability to deliver services and formulate academic, personal/social, and career plans by assessing student needs Engage in appropriate professional development activities Maintain student and family confidentiality as required by federal law and ethical practice Consult with teachers, other school staff, family members, and community agency staff Assist the administration in identifying and resolving student issues, needs, and problems Provide risk screenings and appropriate referrals to parents and mental health professionals Maintain positive community relations and professional obligations by working with local, regional, and state coalitions and organizations Provide information about and referrals to community agencies for students and families Provide individual and small group counseling services to students Develop and facilitate small peer support groups for students Participate in the intervention process, including CST/SST meetings, interpreting reports and/or analyzing student data, and planning and implementing targeted interventions Ensure student records are maintained as per state and federal regulations Interpret cognitive, aptitude, and achievement tests Interpret student records Assist with registering new students and analyze grade reports Coordinate career education planning for students Coordinate the 504 processes, including scheduling and facilitating 504 Team meetings Coordinate state-mandated testing Elementary/Middle School Counselors additional task: Teach classroom lessons in all Pre K-8 classrooms, consistent with the ASCA model Email To A Friend Print Version
