Job Description
Full Time Educator Asheville Farmstead School 218 Morgan Cove Road, Candler, NC 28715 Overview Educators at the Farmstead School are passionate about providing a safe and nurturing environment for children that encourages their social, emotional, physical and intellectual development in an outdoor, nature-based setting. Educators support the development and implementation of programs and activities that promote the social, emotional and physical development of every child enrolled. Educators must demonstrate excellent oral and written communication skills, strong leadership skills and have the ability to work well with others. All our educators must demonstrate the ability to nurture and promote positive growth in children, be energetic, compassionate, and culturally sensitive and aware. Educator is a salaried position reporting to the school’s Executive Director.
Responsibilities Working With Students:
- Help implement the daily program/curriculum of project based activities based on principles of child development and in accordance with the program’s goals and objectives. (Take new ideas to Lead, or hold to yearly review)
- Help maintain a safe, clean, fun, and healthy environment for children. This typically involves a combination of daily, weekly and monthly maintenance activities. ○ Report needed repairs in a timely manner to Lead Educator, Administrative assistant or Executive Director
- Help plan and implement activities that create space for positive behavior through modeling appropriate interactions, providing a reinforcing environment and offering descriptive praise.
- Comfort children and build children’s self esteem using Love and Logic and Positive Discipline. Develop a positive relationship with each child and promote the development of self esteem, self-discipline, and respect for themselves, others and the environment.
- Know, follow and enforce all safety guidelines associated with each program and all program areas.
- Help ensure daily activities, learnings, experiences are delivered consistent with the Cedarsong Way, and specifically to ensure Nature Notes are taken daily for each program and written up monthly for distribution.
- Supervise age-appropriate activities: monitor, direct, protect, encourage, and nurture children. Keep ears/eyes on at least 7 students at all times.
- Observe each child daily to assess skills, interests, and needs and use this information to facilitate learning and growth.
- Take photos of nature finds and upload them to a shared photo album for marketing.
Administrative Duties:
- Attend required training and continuing education.
- Help support Family communications ○ Maintain daily attendance record in Brightwheel ○ Brightwheel daily documentation (photos, kudos, incidents) ○ Monthly Learning Rubrics
- Help maintain accurate program records including incident reports, logbook Documentation. ○ Daily attendance in Brightwheel
- Take students who you think may need a behavior plan initiated to the Lead Educator.
- Other duties as assigned
- Work independently and as a team with other school staff.
Community Engagement:
- Help facilitate one Fall and one Spring Family Discovery Day programs and corresponding work parties- scheduled for the year to be set with the Executive Director in September.
- Attend our Fall and Spring All Family Picnics
- Attend a work party in the Fall and Spring
- Represent the Farmstead at Festivals in town. At least 2 one day events in Asheville and no more than 3, compensated as community engagement.
- Write and submit an educator article for the Newsletter (monthly).
- Support parents in their Positive Discipline growth by providing child care during monthly parenting classes.

- Take new ideas/changes wanted to Lead Educator
- Sharing flaws, redundancies, vague policies and procedures both internally as well as externally, annually at the review time.
- Attend monthly staff meetings, Monday check-ins, and monthly 1:1 meetings with The Executive Director and/or team as appropriate.
Qualifications:
College and/or advanced degree in education preferred Prior early childhood education experience preferred, as is willingness to continue professional development Must pass Federal background check Maintain a valid First Aid and CPR (
