This position provides support for youth staying in the Nightly Shelter. As an important part of this community, you’ll help youth achieve housing stability, heal from trauma, and accomplish their goals. Staff will model effective, appropriate, and timely communication with others regarding resident updates. Timely and accurate completion of record keeping is also essential to this position. This is an awake position; staff are expected to be awake during the entire shift. The Nightly Shelter Youth Coach is expected to participate in ongoing supervision and group supervision to address personal and programmatic development goals, care coordination, and training needs. The Youth Coaches will report to the Nightly Shelter Coordinator with additional support and guidance offered by the Director of Basic Needs Programs. This is a full time position, the hours are Monday – Friday 1:30 am – 9:30 am with a base hourly wage of $21.00 plus a $4.00 shift differential for actual hours worked. Essential Functions Programming
Support and encourage youth to set and meet goals, as well as providing referrals to area resources
Assist youth in job searches, housing searches, etc.
Secure and distribute resident medication Responsible for accurate and timely completion of record keeping including:
Individual youth files, notes, daily data entry, documentation of critical incidents in Foothold
Daily follow-up with e-mail and voice mail to Spectrum staff, supervisor, etc.
Communication and cross over with other staff are expected including the following:
Update on the shift and status of all youth
Medication, critical information discussed Communicate maintenance needs that arise to the Intake Coordinator Attend and participate at bi-weekly individual supervision and weekly staff meetings
Support the training of new staff and respite personnel as assigned
Contribute and participate in the overall growth and improvement of the supported housing program
Set-up and break-down of the shelter space as needed, including necessary cleaning of the program spaces
Other duties as assigned. Knowledge and Skills Required
High school degree required; Bachelor’s Degree preferred. Minimum one year experience working with at-risk youth in a residential setting or equivalent experience. Knowledge and understanding of adolescent development including the following: mental health and substance abuse issues; trauma; attachment issues; complex family dynamics; developmental challenges and educational issues.
Participating in supervision by identifying needs and issues, asking for assistance, support and training, and being able to offer, accept, and utilize feedback. Knowledge of life skills including meal preparation, budgeting, cleaning & personal hygiene, job readiness/employment skills.
Maintain appropriate boundaries and ability to set limits. Commitment to the value of diversity with respect to gender, race, age, socio-economic level, sexual orientation, and religion. Adherence to agency code of ethics and all policies and procedures.
Work Environment This position involves working with youth ages 18-24 in a shelter setting. It requires the ability to build rapport, maintain a safe environment, and communicate with youth and staff alike. Schedules and shifts are subject to change. May require sitting, standing, general use of stairs, and lifting or moving up to 20 pounds.
