$15.00-$16.25 Under the general direction of the Shelter Operations Coordinator, the position ensures clean and humane living conditions for all animals housed within the shelter.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Cleans and sanitizes kennels, cages, and related areas, including cleaning food bowls and litter pans Performs repair and routine maintenance of kennels and cages Prepares and dispenses food and water to animals; transports, unloads, and stores food supplies Performs routine observations of animals and their cages to monitor food consumption, behavior, obvious signs of illness, and condition of the animals for health and safety purposes Administers vaccinations, dewormers, flea treatment prevention, and medications; scans all animals for microchips Humanely transports deceased animals for proper disposal Assists members of the public searching for lost animals or seeking to adopt animals Responsible for the intake of incoming animals some of which may be potentially dangerous, uses intake procedures to ensure their proper identification and for recording their respective locations Responsible for properly filling out paperwork on all animals brought into the shelter; including spelling, neatness, accuracy, and completeness Performs general grounds maintenance including mowing, painting, and minor repairs Fosters good animal control community relations and superior customer service among residents and visitors to the shelter Performs other duties as assigned; including working at off-site adoption locations and other areas to cover absences or relief for other employees Demonstrates knowledge of the County Emergency Management Plan; functions as essential personnel in the event of a declared disaster Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements:

A High School Diploma or a GED equivalent is required. Must possess a valid Florida Driver’s License with a clean driving record. Required to work on a rotating schedule which includes weekends and holidays with rotating days off. The schedule is subject to change based on operational needs.

Employees may be required to perform duties, including the employee’s normal work function or other emergency support functions as deemed necessary by the County, as assigned before, during, and after hazardous weather or state of local emergency. The position regularly lifts and/or moves up to 50 pounds, frequently lifts and/or moves up to 75 pounds, and occasionally lifts and/or moves up to 100-200 pounds. The person in this position needs to frequently move about within and outside of buildings to care for animals. Constantly positions self to care for animals and clean animal cages, including on the floor and in tight spaces. Frequently communicates with supervisors, other staff, and the public regarding the care and wellbeing of the animals. Must be able to exchange accurate information in these situations. The worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, including inclement weather, extreme temperatures and excessive humidity. May occasionally be exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals. Will include exposure to bites, scratches and animal wastes as well as unpleasant odors and noises. Moderate to loud noise level.
