Animal Control Officer 4.0 4.0 out of 5 stars 2101 Jeffco Boulevard, Arnold, MO 63010 Position Overview The City of Arnold is now accepting applications for the position of Animal Control Officer. This important role involves enforcing city ordinances related to pets, stray animals, and addressing issues with dangerous or nuisance animals. In addition, the officer will assist with mosquito abatement and other animal control-related duties. This is a full-time, non-union, non-exempt position reporting to the Senior Animal Control Officer. The regular schedule is primarily weekdays, with occasional weekends and after-hours call-outs as needed. Job Functions – Respond promptly to complaints involving animal issues or violations of animal control ordinances, such as stray animals, bites, property damage, or injuries. – Investigate alleged violations, issue warnings or citations as needed, and provide court testimony when required. Safely remove dead, injured, or dangerous animals from streets and residential areas. Patrol assigned areas to locate and capture stray domestic and wild animals, transporting them to the animal shelter. Provide daily care, feeding, and housing for animals at the shelter. Maintain accurate electronic records and logs of animal control activities and shelter animals. Collect and compile data related to animal and vector control for reporting purposes. Perform mosquito vector control spraying as part of public health efforts. Support public education and outreach programs to promote awareness of animal control laws and humane treatment. Collaborate with media, community groups, and businesses to promote responsible animal care. Work with animal welfare organizations to facilitate animal adoption and rescue initiatives. Recognize common symptoms of animal diseases and advise owners on veterinary care or isolation measures. Operate humane traps, communication devices, and other animal control equipment safely and efficiently. Coordinate with police and emergency personnel to assist in investigations and emergency response. Comply with all relevant laws, ordinances, and departmental policies. Perform additional duties as assigned. Qualifications To succeed in this role, candidates must be capable of satisfactorily performing all essential duties. Prior training and/or experience in handling and controlling animals in settings such as animal shelters, kennels, veterinary clinics, or other animal care facilities is preferred. Missouri pesticide applicator certification is required within one (1) year of hire. Candidates are also expected to obtain Missouri Animal Control Association certifications and engage in ongoing professional development. This position requires considerable initiative, sound independent judgment, and strong professional communication skills. A valid driver’s license, excellent customer service abilities, and computer proficiency are essential. Physical Demands & Working Environment This role frequently involves outdoor work, requiring the ability to navigate diverse physical terrains and tolerate varying weather conditions. The employee may be exposed to poisonous plants, dangerous animals, infectious agents, loud noises, sharp or falling objects, and potentially hostile individuals while performing duties. Restraining or trapping animals may involve facing hazardous situations. Some tasks are performed indoors at a desk, including extended periods of data entry. Occasionally, work is conducted near moving mechanical parts. Noise levels in the work environment range from moderate to loud. Employees must use sound judgment when handling difficult or emergency situations independently while remaining available for consultation during major incidents or precedent-setting cases. The role requires frequent lifting and moving of items weighing up to 50 pounds and occasional lifting of items up to 100 pounds. Specific vision requirements include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, and the ability to adjust focus. Compensation & Benefits The starting pay for this full-time position ranges from $20.07 to $22.08 per hour, depending on qualifications and experience. The City of Arnold provides a comprehensive benefits package, including health, dental, vision, and prescription coverage—100% paid by the City for single coverage.
