Part-time Animal Control & Public Works 3.8 3.8 out of 5 stars McMinnville, TN 37110 The City of McMinnville Public Works Department is looking for an energetic individual who is looking for a part-time position with flexibility in hours and job assignments. The ideal candidate for this position is someone who has a passion for dogs and working outside. This individual should be a self-starter with strong initiative and comfortable working individually. This position will provide assistance to Animal Control on Saturday, Sunday, holidays and serve as backup to the Animal Control Officer. This will result in working 1-4 hours every weekend and holiday feeding and cleaning the cages of the detained dogs. Responsibilities during the week will consist of assisting Public Works with utility mowing, street sweeping and spraying. Minimum Requirements to be considered for the position: HS Diploma or equivalent Must be able to lift, move and carry up to 75 pounds Possession of a valid driver’s license
EQUIPMENT/JOB LOCATION
The employee will operate industrial mowers for right-of-way mowing, street sweeper, animal control vehicle and other light duty tools and animal control devices Work is generally performed outdoors and some tasks will be performed regardless of weather The employee will be exposed to loud noise, dirt, dust, tobacco smoke, and foul odors
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB
The following duties are normal for this job. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned. Provide care for dogs on weekends and holidays Serve as backup to Animal Control Officer as needed Operate industrial mowers for right-of-way mowing Operate street sweeper Operate industrial sprayers; weeds, mosquitos, etc Inspects the equipment for mechanical problems and informs supervisor of any problems Loads and/or helps load and unload trucks that requires lifting 50 to 75 lbs Maintains and cleans related hand tools and equipment May work individually on a specific task or any work on a variety of tasks involving operating machinery Removes debris from street right-of-way and other City property Provide support for sanitation as needed Loads and unloads dirt, gravel, trash, garbage, other debris May operate other moving machinery Performs other work as required
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of State, City, and County traffic regulations Knowledge of City Ordinances and other regulations relating to animal control Knowledge of good public relations procedures as it relates to angry and/or emotional pet owners or complainants Knowledge of the care and use of motor vehicles Knowledge of the materials and equipment used in general maintenance and construction work Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions Ability to work with dogs Ability to work with unpleasant waste materials Ability to work with machines and sharp tools Ability to understand and follow instructions Ability to use independent judgment and work with very little direct supervision when necessary Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with other employees and the public (ADA)
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS OR STANDARDS REQUIRED TO PERFORM ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Must be physically able to operate a variety of automated machines and tools which include a motor vehicle, computer, printer, typewriter, facsimile machine, copy machine, calculator, and telephone. Must be able to use body members to work, move or carry objects or materials. Must be able to exert up to fifty (50) pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to twenty-five (25) pounds of force frequently. Physical demand requirements are at levels of those for heavy work.

Requires the ability to compare and/or judge the readily observable functional, technical, structural, or compositional characteristics (whether similar to or divergent from obvious standards) of data, people, or things. Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate colors, or shades of colors, sounds, odor, depth, and visual cues or signals.
