Job Description
Safety Director 3.5 3.5 out of 5 stars 1267 Poland Spring Road, Casco, ME 04015 The Safety Director is responsible for developing, implementing, and overseeing our comprehensive Safety 24/7 program that aligns with Hancock Lumber’s strategic goals and fosters a culture of safety, shared leadership, accountability, and continuous improvement. This role ensures compliance with OSHA, state, and ICC regulations, manages claims and insurance programs, and leads initiatives that promote employee well-being and operational excellence. This position requires a strategic thinker with strong business and safety acumen, capable of influencing diverse teams and driving cultural transformation. They are a trusted advisor who communicates effectively, leads with empathy, and inspires a shared commitment to safety and organizational values. This position requires a balance of office-based work and field presence, including companywide inspections, trust meetings, and public speaking engagements. The Safety Director must be comfortable teaching safety procedures, reviewing policies, and representing the company in legal and regulatory settings.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS + RESPONSIBILITIES
Promote a proactive safety culture through awareness, education, and recognition. Maintain knowledge and ensure compliance with all relevant federal, state, and local safety laws, regulations, and codes. Stay informed about new regulations and industry standards. Lead and manage all safety programs, including claims management, training, reporting + measuring results, risk mitigation, and compliance. Investigate incidents and implement preventative measures. Develop, prepare, implement and maintain comprehensive safety policies and procedures. Ensure adherence to OSHA, state, and ICC regulations. Oversee drug testing, physicals, and insurance coverage for vehicles and equipment. Represent the company in trust meetings, OSHA hearings, and legal proceedings. Collaborate with Safety Manager, Safety Specialist, and General Managers on fleet maintenance and safety specifications. Research, implement, and nurture any third-party vendor relationships related to safety program + topics Partner and connect with industry peers, including the Group Trust, for shared learning and continuous improvement

ENVIRONMENT + PHYSICAL WORKING CONDITIONS
Office-based with regular travel to locations companywide including sawmills, components facilities, lumberyard locations, and external meetings. Must be able to conduct site inspections and participate in hearings and training sessions. Comfortable speaking to groups and leading employee education on safety procedures and policies.
