Position:

Want to work in a “wild” place with a unique working environment? The North Carolina Zoo seeks experienced Security Guards for its second shift Security team. These positions provide after-hours safety and security, including emergency response for Zoo life-support systems. The schedule is rotational, covering the second shift from 4:00 pm to Midnight, including weekends and some holidays, with a 10% shift premium pay. Work involves both indoor and outdoor environments. This position reports to the Second Shift Security Supervisor, Emergency Operations Manager indirectly and is designated essential/mandatory personnel. Key Responsibilities include but are not limited to: Security Operations Operate Zoo-wide communications, including radio dispatch, multiple phone lines, alarm panels, key access, and video surveillance. Interact with guests during closing procedures, overnight camps, and after-hours events. Control access to the 2,800-acre site, identifying unusual, suspicious, or hazardous situations and taking appropriate action. Emergency Management Recognize and respond to emergencies according to National Incident Management System (NIMS) and NC Zoo policies. Assist in emergency situations as needed. Safety and Security Patrol interior and exterior facilities (~100 buildings) to protect 500-plus developed acres against fire, damage, theft, or other hazards. Identify and address unusual, suspicious, or hazardous situations, making reports as necessary. Ensure the safety and security of guests, staff, exhibits, animal collections, plant collections, and work areas. Enforce policies and procedures for both guests and employees diplomatically. Manage emergencies, contacting Zoo staff, 911 for law enforcement, fire department, or medical personnel, and monitoring activities for policy violations. Monitor life safety systems and respond to alarms. Perform mechanical troubleshooting on equipment and alarms, contacting maintenance as needed. Communications and Administration Operate Zoo-wide communications systems, including radio dispatch, phone lines, alarm panels, key access, and video surveillance. Maintain records and prepare written reports as needed.

Position/Physical Requirements:
Second Shift:

4:00 pm to 12:00 am, with a rotating schedule that includes weekends and holidays. Considered “Essential/Mandatory Staff” required to work during adverse weather and zoo emergencies. Must meet DNCR Fleet Safety Guidelines and have ability to obtain and maintain a valid driver’s license issued from within the United States or be able to obtain one within 90 days of employment Must have the physical ability to sit, bend, reach, stand, walk, lift and carry 30 lbs. (and up to 50 lbs. occasionally), endure extended outdoor conditions year-round, negotiate uneven terrain on foot, hear and respond to radio communication, and drive motor vehicles day and night. Complete First Aid CPR AED course within six months of employment and remain certified. Participate in an occupational health program due to contact with animal containment areas. Work independently without direct supervision. React calmly and effectively during emergency situations. Employ a systematic and logical approach to enforce park regulations tactfully and courteously. Use proper radio procedures and maintain good phone etiquette. Management Preference:

Proven knowledge of emergency and non-emergency protocols for contacting staff and outside agencies after hours (Continuity of Operations Plan – COOP). Knowledge of Incident Command structure and the ability to function as Incident Commander until relieved.
