Fleet Maintenance Technician Job Summary:

Responsibilities include maintaining, repairing, diagnosing and troubleshooting motor vehicles, heavy equipment, and small engine repair and maintenance. Performs various technical trade work in mechanical and electrical installation, repair, and maintenance of District property and equipment. Works under the direction of the Facilities Manager to maintain and carry out responsibilities in accordance with District policies and procedures and applicable laws.

Duties/Responsibilities:
  • Maintains a preventative maintenance inspection and service schedule on filters and moving parts, replaces belts, and makes adjustments on balancing controls.
  • Makes scheduled inspection and services pumps and motors, replaces bearings and packing.
  • Repairs, maintains and inspects engines, transmissions, electrical and exhaust systems, cooling and brake systems, bodies and accessory equipment of all vehicles and equipment in the District inventory.
  • Changes oil, repairs leaks, replaces lamps, gaskets and other items as required.
  • Performs welding and fabrication on equipment and vehicles; installs strobe lights and other accessories.
  • Responsible for diagnosing, maintaining, and repairing hydraulic systems and components of hydraulic machinery and equipment.
  • Performs state inspections of registered vehicles owned by the District.
  • Orders supplies and maintains inventory to meet regular and emergency needs of garage.
  • Responds to emergency road repair calls.
  • Accurately estimate the labor and materials associated with the work.
  • Implements and maintains a repair schedule and records efficiently and accurately, both electric and paper copies, on all vehicles.
  • Provides assistance to other District departments as directed, including making mechanical devices for District-related jobs.
  • Participates in the budget preparation process by recommending new vehicles and equipment, including trades, preparing vehicle and equipment specifications and acquiring prices.
  • Follows safe work procedures. Ensures that proper safety precautions, regulations, and industrial hygiene practices are observed. Maintains mechanical maintenance area in a neat and orderly condition.
  • Communicates with supervisors on job priorities, work progress, maintenance and repair problems.
  • Establish and maintain positive and effective relationships with third party vendors, businesses, and the community.
  • Performs Stand-by duties with facilities and may be required to respond to after-hour maintenance issues.
  • Complies with all District safety policies and procedures.
  • Performs other work as assigned.

  • Ability to operate all departmental equipment and vehicles. Vehicles requiring a CDL driver’s license will only need to be operated on District property.
  • Ability to skillfully inspect, maintain, and repair vehicles and other mechanical equipment.
  • Ability to read, interpret related plans, drawings, and specifications.
  • Knowledgeable of work hazards and safety precautions associated with the work.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical and mechanical manuals for operation, diagnostics, and repair.
  • Knowledgeable in computers and software, including Microsoft Outlook, Word and Excel.
  • Highly organized and able to prioritize tasks.
  • Ability to interact and communicate respectfully, clearly, and concisely both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to utilize proper body mechanics and techniques.
Education and Experience:
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • A combined minimum of a two-year college or technical school and 5 (five) years of related experience. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be taken into consideration.
  • Must possess or obtain ASE A-series certification within 2 (two) years of after start of employment, including; AI-Engine Repair, A4-Suspension & Steering, A5-Brakes, A6-Electrical/Electronic Systems, A7-Heating & Air Conditioning, , and A9-Light Vehicle Diesel Engines.
  • Must have or obtain within 1 (one) year of start of employment a Maine motor vehicle inspection license.
  • Experienced in construction-related utility work, heavy and light mechanical repair, welding, hydraulic system maintenance and repair.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Class C Maine State Driver’s License.
  • AWS Certified Welder credential desirable.
  • CDL license desirable but not required.
Physical Requirements:
  • Generally, performs work in a garage setting, occasionally around fumes, chemicals, and toxic substances.
  • Work is occasionally performed outdoors in extreme weather conditions.
  • Prolonged periods sitting at a desk, on the telephone, and working on a computer.
  • Operate welding equipment as well as the necessary hand and power tools.
  • Must be able to lift up to 80 (eighty) pounds at times and physically able to perform all job-related duties.
