Position Summary:
Mechanics are responsible for maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing heavy equipment, trucks, and vehicles used in utility construction operations.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
None Key Responsibilities:
Equipment Maintenance & Repairs Diagnose and repair issues on a wide range of utility construction equipment, including but not limited to: Excavators, backhoes, trenchers, skid steers, directional drills, vacuum trucks, boom trucks, and trailers. Perform preventive maintenance (PM) tasks including fluid checks, filter replacements, and lubrication. Troubleshoot and repair electrical systems, hydraulic systems, brake systems, fuel systems, air systems, and powertrains. Maintain and repair diesel and gas-powered engines and drivetrains. Perform welding and fabrication repairs as needed for structural integrity or part replacement. Fleet & Vehicle Maintenance Service and repair pickup trucks, service trucks, dump trucks, and commercial vehicles. Ensure compliance with DOT and OSHA regulations for commercial vehicle safety. Documentation & Compliance Maintain accurate service records, repair logs, inspection checklists, and part inventories. Conduct regular equipment inspections and complete maintenance logs for compliance. Report equipment issues or unsafe conditions to supervisors promptly.
Shop & Tool Management:
Maintain cleanliness and organization of the shop and work area. Ensure all tools and diagnostic equipment are calibrated, maintained, and stored properly Assist in managing spare parts inventory and ordering replacement parts as needed.
Required Qualifications:
Education & Certification:
Valid Class A Driver’s License with clean driving record. High School Diploma or GED.
Experience:
, heavy equipment, or utility fleet maintenance
Skills & Competencies:
Strong diagnostic and troubleshooting skills across mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical systems. Ability to read and interpret service manuals, schematics, and technical bulletins. Proficient with diagnostic software and handheld tools (multimeters, scan tools, gauges). Effective communication skills and ability to work with operations and field crews. Must be able to pass a pre-employment drug screen and background check.
Preferred Qualifications:
ASE certification(s), DOT inspection certification, or manufacturer training (e.g., DitchWitch, Vermeer, John Deere) a plus.
Work Environment:
Work outdoors in all weather conditions, including extreme heat, cold, rain, or snow. Exposure to dust, mud, insects, and loud equipment. Regularly exposed to construction hazards such as open trenches, moving equipment, and vehicular traffic. May require overtime or weekend work depending on project needs.
Physical Requirements:
Overall Physical Requirements Must be in good physical condition with the stamina to perform physically demanding tasks throughout the workday. Capable of working in environments that may include extreme temperatures, noise, vibrations, and confined spaces. Strength & Endurance Ability to lift and carry heavy parts, tools, and equipment weighing up to 75 pounds independently and up to 100+ pounds with assistance. Must be able to perform physically strenuous tasks such as removing and installing heavy components (e.g., transmissions, hydraulic systems, axles).
Mobility and Range of Motion:
Frequent standing, walking, bending, twisting, and squatting are required throughout the shift.
Must be able to:
▪ Crawl under vehicles and into tight spaces. ▪ Climb ladders and onto large vehicles or equipment for inspections and repairs. ▪ Work in awkward positions such as reaching overhead, lying on one’s back, or kneeling for extended periods.
Manual Dexterity and Coordination:
Must have good hand-eye coordination and fine motor skills for using precision tools, diagnostic equipment, and performing delicate repairs or calibrations. Ability to grip, twist, and manipulate tools and small components with precision and control. Repetitive tasks include turning wrenches, tightening fasteners, or operating diagnostic tools.
Environmental Exposure:
Regular exposure to grease, oils, fuels, solvents, and other potentially hazardous substances. May work around loud equipment, dust, fumes, and moving mechanical parts. Use of personal protective equipment (PPE) such as safety glasses, gloves, hearing protection, and steel-toed boots.

$24.00 – $28.00 per hour Expected hours: 40 – 55 per week
