Job Description

Class :

Work involves the operation of a public pool, care, repair and maintenance of parks, recreation areas, sprinkler systems and other facilities. Work is performed under the Working Foreman and includes direct supervision over work of laborers. Does related work as required.

Typical Work Activities:

Seeds, fertilizers, waters and mows grounds; Plants, maintains and cares for flowers, trees and other plants; Maintains, repairs and marks athletic fields for all activities; Falls and trims trees, shrubbery and other plants; Plows and shovels snow from roadways, parking lots and walkways; Maintains, cleans, repairs and tests public pools; Responsible for the making and maintaining of ice at the ice rink; Repairs and maintains pool, grounds keeping and recreation equipment; Prepares records and reports; Operates motor equipment; Uses commercial pesticides for aquatic vegetation and ornamental, shade tree and turf. Full Performance knowledge, skills, abilities and personal characteristics: Working knowledge of landscaping practices; Working knowledge of the maintenance of lawns, playgrounds, recreation fields, plants, trees, shrubbery and other landscaping; Working knowledge of operation, maintenance and testing of a public pool greater than 3,000 square feet; Ability to work effectively with superiors, subordinates, state agencies and the public; Ability to communicate and be capable of research, analysis and report writing; Sound judgement, initiative and mechanical aptitude; Physical condition commensurate with demands of the position.

Minimum Qualifications :

Graduation from a two (2) year college with emphasis on turf management; or Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and two years’ experience working in grounds-keeping; or An equivalent combination of training and experience as defined in (1) or (2) above.

Special Requirements:

Possession of a commercial driver’s license permit issue by the State of New York Department of Motor Vehicles at the time of appointment and CDL license within twelve months of the date of hire.
