MAINTENANCE HELPER QUALIFICATIONS

High school diploma or equivalent. Good physical and emotional health including the ability to perform duties described in essential functions. Must meet background clearance requirements as specified by Alabama. Hold and maintain a valid driver’s license for the type of equipment to be driven. Statutes and State Board of Education regulations.

JOB GOAL

To provide students with safe, clean, attractive, and reasonably comfortable facilities and to protect the investment in buildings, grounds, and equipment.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Ensure the cleanliness of school buildings, grounds, and equipment by: Supervising the work of individuals or services employed to assist in cleaning and assuring that standards are met. Inspecting for cleanliness and reporting conditions to the principal. Performing cleaning operations when necessary. Perform basic maintenance and repair tasks in a variety of areas as assigned in accordance with all applicable codes and regulations. Report to the principal any maintenance problem requiring special assistance. Keep assigned lead and/or maintenance supervisor informed of potential problems or unusual events. Perform the required preventative maintenance inspections. Maintain a work area for storage of equipment and records. Attend training sessions as scheduled by the Maintenance Supervisor. Perform other job-related duties that might be reasonably assigned. Respond to inquiries and concerns in a timely manner. Follow federal and state laws and School Board policies. Respond to emergency situations during and after school hours for the purpose of resolving immediate safety concerns. Use the maintenance order/ticket system, making sure work orders have been written and approved before performing tasks, except in emergency situations. Coordinate with assigned lead and/or supervisor and other trades for the purpose of completing projects and work orders efficiently. Perform a variety of maintenance activities (e.g., carpentry, painting, glazing) for the purpose of completing projects within established time frames. Install system component parts, classroom and office equipment and facility components (e.g., lighting, heating and ventilation systems, alarms, plumbing, security, electrical panels, etc.) for the purpose of providing a safe and workable environment. Arrange furniture and equipment for the purpose of providing adequate preparations for special events. Clean gutters, culverts, catch basins and other drainage structures for the purpose of preventing damage and/or limiting liability exposure. Change filters at all sites in the system. Assist in surplus pickup at all sites in the system. Maintain proper care of tools and materials. Strength and dexterity necessary to perform all required tasks including lifting items up to 100 pounds, as well as crawling, stooping, bending, climbing, working from ladders and roof tops in very hot and cold weather condition. May be required to work on scaffolds, stepladders, and high extension ladders or man-lift on occasion. Use of hands for grasping, crawling, reaching, pushing and pulling. Required to work around moving machinery, exposure to marked changes in temperature and humidity, driving automotive equipment, and exposure to dust, fumes, and gases. Required to use manual tools and power equipment common to construction trades. Perform other tasks consistent with the goals and objectives of this position.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT

Twelve (12) months unless otherwise determined by the Board. Salary and work year to be established by the Board.

Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board’s policy on evaluation of personnel.
