Job Description

Maintenance Worker Town of Ronda 123 Chatham Street, Ronda, NC 28670 O The job of Maintenance Worker provides maintenance services as needed and/or assigned. This position, under the general supervision of the Maintenance Supervisor, performs a variety of manual and skilled tasks involving maintenance and cleaning of Town streets, storm drains, public rights-of-way, landscaped areas, equipment, buildings, water systems, and other public facilities. Operates power driven, hand-held and “walk behind” equipment.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Repair and maintenance duties requiring skill, independent judgement, and knowledge of Town buildings, roads, drainage systems, and parks. 2. Answer questions and provide information to the public; investigate complaints and recommend corrective action, as necessary. 3. Conducting water system checks, daily pump meter readings, monthly meter readings, water connection, reconnection, and disconnection, bacteria testing of potable water, and flushing of fire hydrants every 3 months. 4. Coordinates specialty work with contractors. Assists Yadkin Valley Sewer Authority (YVSA) when working around raw sewage/wastewater. 5. Perform routine and special maintenance on vehicles and Town tools and equipment. Ordering necessary parts and materials associated with repairs. 6. Perform landscaping duties and routine property maintenance such as seeding, planting, mowing, trimming, mulching, tree removal, pick up trash, and rake leaves on the town-maintained properties. Operates and oversees the use of mowers, leaf blowers, chainsaws, trimmers, and other light and heavy equipment. 7. Replace and repair streets and park signs. 8. Operate vehicles to plow snow on the streets as weather conditions dictate. 9. Collects yard waste, furniture, and appliances from the street curb during spring and fall clean-up week. 10. Performs other related duties as assigned to ensure the efficient and effective functioning of the town’s maintenance program.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of general practices applied in care and safe operation of equipment, which includes town truck(s). mowers, tractors, etc. Working knowledge of standard practices, materials, tools, and equipment utilized in the work environment. Knowledge of work hazards and applicable safety precautions. Ability to work under pressure. Ability to work well with others and the public. Ability to withstand exposure of varied climatic conditions.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT

The usual methods of performing the job’s function require the following physical demands: climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, pushing, pulling, lifting, fine finger dexterity, and repetitive motions. Must be able to perform work exerting up to 50 pounds of force. The job is performed under frequent temperature variations. Availability for after-hours and on-call rotating schedules.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • Valid North Carolina Driver’s License and acceptable driving record
  • Negative drug screen results
  • Must be willing to obtain water and wastewater certifications as needed or required by the Town.

$17.50 – $20.00 per hour Expected hours: 40 per week
