Job Statement
The Water Plant Operator II is a technical and skilled position performing analytical and process related work in the operation of a drinking water treatment plant and meeting distribution system demands while ensuring compliance with local, state, and federal regulations.
Essential Duties
Performs all duties and responsibilities necessary to maintain regulatory compliance with all ADEM, EPA, or other applicable regulatory body policies, laws, etc.
Assumes the responsibility for the delivery of adequate, safe, and quality potable water and takes immediate action if compromised. This requires working independently during after hours, weekends, and holidays.
Monitors and controls the telemetry and SCADA systems using the information to control the reservoir valves, wells, and booster pumps to distribute finished water throughout the system.
Immediately notifies Water Treatment Plant Operator-Chief and/or Water Treatment Plant Supervisor of results indicative of impact on water quality or the detection of equipment malfunctions.
Monitors and adjusts parameters as needed based on the laboratory analysis of raw and finished water for proper drinking water treatment.
Operates and regulates chemical feeders and other equipment to ensure optimum treatment in the most economical manner.
Operates and controls electric motor, pumps, valves, etc. either manually or remotely to regulate raw and finished water flows.
Performs basic maintenance and troubleshooting of plant equipment.
Reviews accuracy of all written and electronic log entries, records, and reports and ensures all entries have been correctly recorded at the close of the shift.
Conducts regular inspection walkthroughs of the plant reporting any security issues, equipment malfunctions, or other issues of concern to the Water Treatment Plant Operator-Chief and/or Water Treatment Plant Supervisor.
Additional Duties
Performs wash down of equipment to include basins, filters, etc. and general cleaning duties using an industrial hose.
Answers routine questions from customers pertaining to water issues or routes to proper personnel for response.
Performs all responsibilities until a relief certified operator has arrived and been briefed on current operating conditions.
Assists in the operator training program to ensure personnel are properly trained, equipped, and motivated so that treatment plant operations can be accomplished in a safe, timely, and cost-effective manner.
Monitors for the development of new water quality regulations or treatment techniques occurring at the local, state, and federal levels.
Maintains the needed continuing educations hours in compliance with ADEM Division 10 to remain certified.
Performs additional duties as assigned.
Job Requirements
Education/Certification/Training:
High school graduate or GED equivalent required. Associates degree or equivalent coursework in chemistry, math, hydraulics, and computers is highly preferred. Must have ADEM Grade IV Water Treatment Operator Certification or have the ability to obtain reciprocity through ADEM within six (6) months. Consideration taken for candidates that have passed the ADEM Grade IV Water Treatment Operator exam but has not obtained the required experience. Employment subject for review if deadline(s) not met.
Experience:
Minimum two (2) years of experience in a Grade IV water treatment plant. Equivalent working experience through training programs, classes, or seminars can be used as a substitute for one (1) year of working experience as approved by ADEM. Knowledge of water quality limits, advanced water treatment, technique/processes, operational characteristics, services, and activities of water treatment plant including the ability to operate a full range of pumps, chemical feeders, motors, controllers, and process equipment/instrumentation. Knowledge of ADEM Division 7 and Division 10 regulations and laws.

Physical Demands/Environmental Conditions:
Requires visual and manual dexterity, including being able to differentiate color, climbing of steps & ladders, exposure to outdoor weather, carrying items or equipment weighing up to 50 lbs.
Other:
Shift work required. Subject to “on call” and emergency duty. Safe use of hazardous chemicals associated with the job. Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license.
This position is considered a safety sensitive position. All employees in safety sensitive positions are subject to random drug and alcohol testing.
The Selected Candidate for this position will be required to successfully pass a
WORK KEYS
test unless already obtained the ADEM Grade IV Water Certification.
