Description
GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES
The Power Plant Operator is responsible for the safe operation, performance and monitoring of the steam-turbine and associated auxiliary equipment. Controls all phases of steam electric generating station by coordinating power generation, maintaining turbo generators, and cooling towers. Completes regular preventive maintenance activities as assigned on a rotating shift.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Start, stop, troubleshoot, and repair of equipment in coordination with the process related to power generation.
Operate equipment which uses thermal energy, extracted from pressurized steam, to generate rotary motion. Ensure turbo generator operates within parameter range approved and take action according to operation instructions.
Inspect and diagnose malfunctions by testing & troubleshooting power generating equipment. Ensures all company and OSHA safety standards, policies, and procedures are followed. Performs other related projects and assignments as business dictates.
SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Must be able to read, write and speak the English language to understand directions on the job, over the radio, and to ensure safety for all on the work site.
Must have intermediate mechanical aptitude and the ability to read and understand wiring diagrams, blueprints, schematics, and manuals.
Effective verbal and written communication skills with the ability to comprehend and convey mechanical information.
Ability to operate yard truck forklift, man lift, overhead crane, hoist, various hand & power tools, computer, drill press, threaders, benders, grinders, ohms meter, megohmmeter, phase rotation checker, voltage tester, amp meter, micrometer, T-square, level, impact wrenches and measuring tape. Familiarity with
ISA/IEEE
standards a plus.
Ability to work overtime, weekends, and holidays on a rotating shift.
Ability to adapt quickly to a multicultural environment.
Bilingual and Biliterate – English and Spanish, preferred.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
High school diploma or equivalent.
Must have four (4) years’ experience as Power Plant Operator in steam and turbine generation in an industrial environment utilizing voltages up to 69,000. Must have knowledge of electrical theory, knowledge of PLC’s and experience in industrial controls, transformers, and electric motor repair. Must have prior training, knowledge, and proficiency with the National Electric Code (NEC), NFPA 70E, LOTO, PPE, OSHA workplace practices, etc.
Understanding of material handling systems, piping, valves, pressure vessels, pumps, cooling towers, building & grounds, and air compressors beneficial.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Regular attendance is required during your scheduled shift.
Must be able to perform all duties within an environment that includes heat, stairs, ramps, uneven walking surfaces, noise, and dust.
Must be able to perform all duties within the power plant operations, which includes bending, steps, kneeling, reaching and crawling.
Must be able to lift to 50 pounds

Sugar Cane Growers Cooperative of Florida (SCGC) is comprised of mostly family-owned grower-members who produce approximately 4 million tons of sugarcane yielding approximately 400,000 tons of raw sugar and 20 million gallons of molasses, grown on over roughly 75,000 acres of land primarily in Palm Beach County, Florida.
