Job Description The City of Raleigh Public Utilities Department, now also known as Raleigh Water, provides water and sanitary sewer services to roughly 198,000 metered customers and a service population of about 600,000 people in Raleigh, Garner, Wake Forest, Rolesville, Knightdale, Wendell and Zebulon areas. The Senior Maintenance Technician
- Wastewater Infrastructure Repair role functions as the primary transporter of materials, equipment, and refuse for each construction crew assigned to the Repair Program within the Sewer Maintenance Division.
Crews within this program are tasked with repairing deficiencies found within the sanitary sewer collection system, as well as responding to emergency calls. In addition to transport functions, you will also provide manual labor support for assigned work.
Work Hours:
Senior Maintenance Technicians work a rotating after hours call schedule. Pay for being on call (standby) is 8 hours at regular pay. If called back into work, the employee is paid at the overtime rate as indicated by policy. Hours could differ based upon flexibility and seasonality, wherein availability to work a varied schedule is required for this position.
Work Location:
This position will report to the Public Utilities Raleigh Water site at 1715 Wendell Boulevard in Wendell, North Carolina. Staff assigned to this role will provide functions critical to completion of the following tasks: Daily vehicle and equipment inspections
Haul materials, supplies, equipment, earth and refuse
Maintain and operate wide range of gas-powered small equipment and heavy equipment related to utility construction projects
Assist with truck/supply room inventory

Senior Raleigh Water Maintenance Technician:
Qualifying Senior Maintenance Technicians are eligible for training certifications that provide stipends of additional 12.5% to base pay

Employer paid insurance Duties and Responsibilities Performs semi-skilled or skilled general maintenance with the proper maintenance tools and equipment, following established safety policies, procedures and applicable codes and regulations
Serves as a lead worker by assigning work and monitoring work completion as needed
Operates and/or transports equipment, including assigned heavy equipment for various functions such as grading/excavating, collection and removal of debris, refuse and/or snow; and/or material application and distribution
Plans routes and sets up work areas for safety and operational efficiency. Completes setup/teardown of traffic control work zones and various safety equipment including trench boxes, hydraulic shoring, and confined space equipment
Operates, maintains, and inspects assigned equipment and tools; performs inspections to ensure safe operating conditions. Performs routine repairs and/or replacement of parts, cleaning, preventative maintenance, and monitors need for replacement or advanced repairs
Plans, monitors and reviews inventory, resources and materials needs. Initiates orders for resources based on requirements, working with contract workers and trade specialists when needed by scheduling and coordinating repairs and maintenance services
Performs varying labor tasks such as cutting asphalt streets or concrete sidewalks, hand digging to locate buried utilities, loading/unloading heavy equipment, using gas powered saws to cut and remove damaged sewer pipes, installation of new sewer pipes/fittings, replacement of sewer manhole rings/covers, backfilling excavations, work site cleanup, materials hauling/disposal, and additional site restoration activities
Supports the City’s emergency response in the event of inclement weather, to include support for debris cleanup after severe storms or snow and ice response for Division facilities
Typical Qualifications Education and Experience:
High School Diploma or GED and three years of assignment-related equipment operation/driving, maintenance experience related to utility work, or experience related to the fields listed below as shown:
Construction:
grading, storm drain, site work, builder, plumber, any utility construction (including fiber installation), road construction
Landscaping:
installer, maintenance, irrigation
Mechanic:
heavy equipment, HVAC, hydraulic systems
Farming:
manual labor, equipment operating
Moving Company:
labor, truck driver
General Municipal Worker:
utility inspector
Tech School Student:
mechanical
Firefighter:
full or part-time OR An equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above, unless otherwise subject to any other requirements set forth in law or regulation.
Licensing and Certifications:
Valid North Carolina Class C Driver’s License with a satisfactory driving record, or the ability to obtain within 60 days of hire
Valid North Carolina Class A Commercial Driver’s License with a satisfactory driving record, or the ability to obtain within 90 days of hire
NC WPCSOCC
Collection System Operator Certification Grade I, or the ability to obtain within 1 year of hire

Positions in this class typically require: stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions.
Heavy Work:
Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
Working Conditions:
Work is performed in both the field and in an indoor office environment with moderate exposure to atmospheric conditions (such as fumes, odors, dusts, gases, poor ventilation, etc.); moderate exposure to environmental conditions (such as disruptive people, imminent danger, or a threatening environment); and frequent exposure to intense noise. Work is conducted in a crew setting primarily in an outdoors environment in close proximity to heavy equipment, vehicle traffic, and open excavations.
